A thought: I probably shouldn't have dove back into Livejournal-Land, with what may have seemed a misleading ferocity. Which isn't to say that I won't be posting here - more that I shouldn't (can't) be as precise, just now, about hours or days

My serious favorites:
The Gift by Patrick O'Leary, a story about stories... but with stories inside. Very good, very unusual, full of magic and wizards.
The God of Small Things, by Arundhati Roy.
My funny favorite:
The Princess Bride, by William Goldman, which is just as good if not better than the movie made from it.
and a recent good read: I just finished The Mists of Avalon, which basically retells the entirety of Arthurian legend through the points of view of the female characters.

and secondly: wowsa. and thank you! i've read some of your list, but The Princess Bride sounds like exactly what i need right now. i crave books that, while they themselves don't need to be traditional, are told in the tradition of real Storytelling. poetics & characters divine, yes - but also, the unfolding of a plot that keeps you turning pages in that certain way; that just might involve fey or other magical forces. thank you, thank you!
[arundhati roy is a goddess... i won't attempt to do her justice; just. that.]
p.ssss.: you probably-maybe already know this, but still, it's such a fun factioid - so in case you don't!: the male lead in Princess Bride is an alum of our fabulous SLC. (i always forget the actors' name--??) also, he's gay, which - speaking realistically as well as stereotypically - is not such a surprise. but it makes me smile a silly smile, anyways.
much love,
robin

For funny:
I love Ayun Halliday's The Big Rumpus (it's about children, but is a hoot), No Touch Monkey! (her travel book) and there's one on her various jobs (Job Hopper!) that makes me laugh like mad.
_Rent Girl_ is sort of funny and sad in parts, but there's enough loopy silliness around the sex work in it that it's wonderful. I love Michelle Tea (and if you need to laugh till your sides split, read her essay on roleplaying Jesus and Mary Magdalene in the On Our Backs Guide to Lesbian Sex--I'm cracking up thinking about it.)
I was Seven in 75 is a hilarious cartoon book by Ellen Forney.
I also have a book called The Faery Ring with beautiful pictures that I'm saving for you:)
Hope to see you soon!

even though you said you're not wanting to spend too much time online these days, i wanted to tell you that i love the website goodreads.com. it's like myspace but with books, so you can list what you're reading and wanting to read, and are connected to friends and can see what they're reading, etc. it is pretty darn cool!
i am always happy when you post something! *hugs*
