[Rose is taking the whole situation in stride. Seriously, there are only so many times one can be trapped in another universe and join up with the local military before even that gets a little routine. Going back to school, though... that's new.

She doesn't bother to visit the dorm and change out of her UNIT uniform, deciding instead to jump right ( Read more... )

[And Marco grabs a seat across from her and glances at the various gear.]

Looks like someone's well prepared, eh. Just get back from a mission?

Sure, but how do you spot a traitor or a wild animal? They look for anything different. And here in this world, they have to worry about sorceresses causing things like the Time Compression.

Every outlaw has a story to tell about why he chose that path. And for those that didn't choose it... all the moreso, eh. [He's mildly less chipper, and a lot more serious when he says that though.] For me, I got adopted by the greatest man who ever lived. That automatically branded me a pirate since he was, eh.

The best traitors look the same. The sorceresses that, as far as they know, are from here and are muckin' up everyone else's places.

Guilty by association. But... even if your dad's a pirate, you didn't have to join the family business, did you?

Exactly.

[Shrugs.] Someone has to keep the ship financially afloat. If you're looking for moral high-ground here, you won't find it. I love and respect my Pops because even as the strongest man in the world, he rarely used it, eh? Islands we "controlled" were just islands we defended from other pirates because somebody had to and the marines weren't. I'm an outlaw, and I've earned my bounty, but I sure as hell don't regret it.

I've been every side of the law there is, and then some; I know better than to judge. Just tryin' to get a feel for things.

If the marines--them being the police sort in your world, I'm guessin'--aren't doing their job, why do people keep them about?

... have some delicious TL;DR fierybluebird July 16 2011, 06:25:08 UTC
There's police, and then there's marines. Each island has its own army force, they're just not that strong. The world government has to keep the peace between all the countries and fight pirates who don't stick to any one given island or country. The marines are the military force for that.

As for enforcing law... they claim to all follow justice. [He shrugs. Justice is never going to be Marco's strength.] But since they're still run by the World Government that means they get prioritized to whatever the politicians deem important. For instance, slavery is illegal everywhere in my world. However, tenryuubito are the descendant royalty of the World Government creators which means their whims are law. They can own slaves, kill random people in the street, whatever they want. And if someone were to resist them, the armed might of the marines would be required to step in with enough force to eliminate an island and stop that idiot.

[Shrugs.] It's not that the marines don't do their job. Their job is hunting pirates, fighting ( ... )

[So the marines are basically UNIT... if the UN were run by self-entitled royals instead of a sometimes-useless democratic committee. How lovely.]

I've got time. 'S not often that I get to hear about how other worlds work.

[She's probably not going to like the answer, but she has to ask:] ...what did they do with all the people? The ones that met this Pirate King.

Trial and execution.

By trial, it's mostly just to show off to the world that they caught such an infamous person. Just as the execution is as well.

[A sigh.] Your world really needs a kick in the arse; a revolution would do it good.

But go on. The government tried to get rid of all the Pirate King stuff and...?

[Gah, so much information to process.]

Erm... would you explain what's a 'devil fruit' and 'nakama'? I'm not familiar with 'em.

fierybluebird July 22 2011, 03:39:22 UTC
Nakama are your crew. Like a chosen family. You travel with them through thick and thin and even if you don't always get along, you protect them with everything you've got. For people who don't generally have much, loyalty to nakama is the most valuable thing possible.

And a devil fruit... that's harder to explain. Remember the wings? I have that power from my own devil fruit. Each one is different and gives a different power. My father could create earthquakes and tsunamis, others have things like turning into fire or diamond, ice, magma, sand, things like that. Darkness is the one Teach wanted. There can only be one devil fruit of a power at a time in the whole world.

Nakama. [She likes it: a nice short word for such a complicated idea.]

A fruit that gives you magical powers. [She's seen a lot of strange things, but that one was definitely new.] I think I'd have liked to visit your world. Pirates and strange fruit and corrupt governments.

Aye, nakama. [Grins.]

Heh, you say that now, but my world is very dangerous, eh. There's a reason only one man made it to the end of the Grand Line and back alive. And millions and millions of the world's strongest have tried. Devil fruit are very rare as it is, and there's no saying you'd get the one you want. Teach waited for decades before anyone ever came across the darkness devil fruit.
