CARNIVAL! (Backdated to last Friday)

Aug 04, 2011 12:57

[There seems to be a festive atmosphere all throughout Garden. Why? Because it's the Homecoming Carnival! The Garden Festival Committee has been hard at work all morning and when 1300 hours strikes, it's finally open for everyone to enjoy.

There's a map on the Directory which shows where everything is located:

[Kate had been wandering the carnival when Edge's trio of booth's caught her eye. Oh, those she can do. The real question was which one first... Eventually she settles on the milk jug toss. The first ball she tests her aim with the object she's really unfamiliar with using. The second she almost knicks it. The third she hits the jugs in the middle, sending them flying.]

...Losing my edge.

Oh, right. It's an American expression basically meaning "I'm not going to or I don't' know how to answer that."

Oh, Americ is the kingdom you're from?

It's America, actually. And it's just a country, not a kingdom.

Oh, just a town! Okay, I see.

[They really are drawing from different reference pools...]

A country where I'm from is sort of like a kingdom, just with a different style of government than a monarchy.

...like what?

[Countries couldn't have one town elder! What else was there!?]

Well America is a democracy. Actually, we're a republic but everyone calls it a democracy. Basically the people vote on people to represent them in government bodies.

...How does that even work? You just pick some random guy and put him in power?!

Well we try to make sure they're qualified first.

Wouldn't you just end up electing the heir anyway, then?

[Who was more qualified than the son or daughter of the existing leaders, after all?]

Not necessarily, that's sort of what we're trying to avoid, I think. One family or group of families in charge of everyone else.
