CARNIVAL! (Backdated to last Friday)

[There seems to be a festive atmosphere all throughout Garden. Why? Because it's the Homecoming Carnival! The Garden Festival Committee has been hard at work all morning and when 1300 hours strikes, it's finally open for everyone to enjoy.

[Kate had been wandering the carnival when Edge's trio of booth's caught her eye. Oh, those she can do. The real question was which one first... Eventually she settles on the milk jug toss. The first ball she tests her aim with the object she's really unfamiliar with using. The second she almost knicks it. The third she hits the jugs in the middle, sending them flying.]

...Losing my edge.

Avoid it?! Why would you? Who could be more suited than the people raised to the duty since birth?

Because sometimes their kids are dumb.

Parents who raise children unsuited to the crown are themselves unsuited to it!

[Edge loves his parents... and assumes power comes with a crown. Biases...]

Yeah, that's sort of the idea.

Then why would you put them in power in the first place?!

[donttouchmybow]

Because people make mistakes? That's why elections are every four years, so if we make mistakes we can vote them out.

Wait, so even if someone's doing a great job, you'd kick him out anyway?

[donttouchmybow]

Well if he--or she--is doing a good job you can re-elect him.

A good job isn't always a popular job. Sometimes a leader has to make choices no one likes because they're the right thing to do.

[Nods.] I mean it's not a perfect system, but seeing as we fought a whole war to get away from a king, we're not about to go back to a monarchy any time soon.

[flirtninja]

An entire war? How is that even possible?

[donttouchmybow]

Well the short version was we were a colony of another country called England, and the colony didn't like the way the King was treating them, so they rebelled and formed their own country.

So the King was being a bad king, then?

Pretty much.

Then that king should have never been in power in the first place! I suppose I can't blame you. A failed royal family like that...
