It was all in the name of art....I'd NEVER in a million years consider going to something such as this unless I absolutely had to! But last night was one of those occasions where one just had to bite the bullet. Barry Moulton, a local encaustic wax ( Read more... )

Yes, it is very surreal! You should see some of Barry's fantasy pictures too......very Tolkien! Go here to see one:

My ones DO look rather more impressive on here than they do in actual life though. They are really very small pictures! I can't wait to get my hands on some huge card so that I can paint BIG!!! Now THEY.....will look impressive!

Wow Wenchie! They look amazing. I love the effects you acheived. It sort of looks like it's in a cave or under water or something. I wish I could try this! :D

Tell you what.....it's easier than it looks! The equipment is a bit costly to start with. You need a flat iron (not a steam one..art shops sell the proper ones, special sealed card, coloured beeswaxes (candles or crayons won't do) a heated stylus, hairdryer (or better still electric paint-stripper) and a scraper to lift out colour to highlight. Tissues are needed to clean the iron and you also need some sort of backing paper to work on. But once you get the basics, you can create all sorts of wonderful abstracts, landscapes, fantasy pictures, even portraits! Check out your local art shop, it's becoming more popular now so they may stock the equipment. There are several online shops too, just type in encaustic wax art to a search engine and see what comes up!
