I feel you regarding women... it's always been really hard for me to relate to women on shows or comics, which is why I always ended up crossplaying!! However, Britta, Annie, and Daria are my GPOYs :P (but they're like, super huge exeptions)
I like Annie a lot because she's definitely feminine, but that's not all there is to her. You don't see too much of that, I think. I like seeing an example of writers giving a character depth and personality while letting her still be a woman.
And yes, Daria. Remember when she started dating Tom? And teenage me was like, "Oh, come on," at first, but then they just nailed it.
Actually, it took me a long time to kind of accept that you could have a female character that expressed emotions or cared about her clothes or whatever and have her still be a strong character. Which was my own internalized sexism talking, of course. Now that I'm over that, I maybe value those types of characters the most, even though I'm not particularly girly. It's nice to see myself in characters who aren't exactly like me.
Who else is awesome? All the ladies on Battlestar Galactica. Pretty much any character written by Bioware.
Aaaah, did you ever read anything by Tamora Pierce? She does young adult fantasy, and her female characters are
( ... )
Forgot to mention Helga on Hey Arnold! Sorry, Helga... that girl was super sensitive, and wore pink... but was so not feminine... she was so interesting!! I really blame the media, society and Japan for making us think that women only care about appearances, and that if they don't, they're not being women... of course, it's becaue men write them. ARRRR. What was I saying? YES, I think the wohle thing with Daria and Tom is really, really heavy. You have someone who's not used to liking anybody, and suddenly and unintentionally she steals her only friend's boyfriend? That's heavy shit. ~ * E M O T I O N S * ~
Anyway, I've never read anything by Tamora Pierce. I can't read D:
