On this day, I write an abstract. Thing #237 I Hate About Said Activity: I can give you a damn good idea of what my paper is on in about a hundred words. The rest is padding. And I despise padding.

But I am not here to bitch about my desperate attempts to break into academia. (That is for every other post.) Instead, I'm going to talk about ( Read more... )

inside-out deserts, silly empire you are not rome, exit emily, england

Yes, oh my God, we have got to hang out at some point. We pretty much swapped countries this summer. XD

Egypt! I would do...I don't know, I would do some seriously unethical things if it would get me over there. Your Classics class sounds amazing, and I am burning with envy right now. Do you guys seriously just--pack up and go abroad as a group?

A tiny little town called Liss. It's about forty miles out of London! =D

Man, if you can swing a trip to anywhere in the Mediterranean, then godspeed. Godspeed for both of us. XD

Oh man, Turkey!!! :D That looks like an incredible trip ^___^

Well, October 25th - November 4th I am going to be in sunny San Francisco (for Yaoi-con but also to spend a week with friends more than anything). It's my um... 7th visit.

I'm hoping at the end of this month/beginning of next month to visit somewhere in Europe. I just haven't decided where yet. Probably Amsterdam, but Berlin, Helsinki and Stockholm are all contenders too (well, the whole of Europe is a contender but I can't afford to go everywhere XD).

I'm meant to be going to Paris next summer too to go to Japan Expo if possible!

I am wild with the need to get over there, I can't even tell you.

But gosh, San Fransisco is amazing! Probably one of my favorite cities in the country. You've been before, yeah?

It's one of my favourite cities too ^^ I've been several times and it never gets old. There's still a lot I want to see! I did a train journey last year though when I was travelling the US for 7 weeks, from Salt Lake City to San Francisco, and the last part of it, as the train was approaching the city along the edge of the water was stunning. Like a scene from Spirited Away.

Awesome!! I'm so jealous that you get to go to England so much; I haven't been there since I was 13 (which was also the last time I've been somewhere outside the North American continent *sob*) I've also only been to NYC once for spring break a few years ago, and I definitely want to go again sometime! So many productions I didn't have time to see ;=;

Unlike usual, I'm actually traveling a lot this year! I'm hoping for either Beijing or Shanghai during the month of April, then vacation time mid-June in either Japan or mainland Europe with my family. Not counting all the traveling I'll be doing within the US (Phoenix and LA in October, wherever I end up getting interviews in December and January).

Wow, you're quite the globe trotter this year! That's so awesome!

(What are you interviewing for?)

You're telling me!! I'm absolutely delighted that things are finally coming together this year, after so many years of family travel plans going up in smoke for one reason or another. Though I shouldn't count on it until the plane tickets are bought. Though the China thing, if that gets screwed up it's my own fault haha. (It's through my school. Finally I do a study abroad after all these years! Though I don't know how much time I'll get to sightsee.)

(For residency/intern spots, to start in July. Since the field I'm applying to is more competitive than my scores are, I've applied to places all over the country with the plan of going wherever they'll take me. So if I'm lucky I'll end up lots of random places!)

TURKEY!!! It's also on my "top places in the world I want to visit" list.

Ugh, going away is kind of hard for me seeing as I don't work during the school year and my parents. Though, if I get into History of Ancient Civilizations next year I may be able to take a trip to Greece and Italy. (Ignores voice telling her it's never going to happen)

There's always a little voice in your head telling you that travel is too expensive, or impossible, or scary, or whatever. And it doesn't shut up until you're on the plane. XD Aim for that trip to Italy! It will be amazing.

God, we really must pull together the money for Turkey, musn't we.

The other places on my list this year are Sofia, Bulgaria, next August, for The International Byzantine Congress.

And everything else depends on how the dissertating progresses. Maybe Kiev. Maybe South Italy. Possibly just D.C., next summer, for a sigilography/numismatics workshop.

Yes. Yes, we must. Because I'm halfway there in my head already.

Oh my God, Bulgaria. I swear, you guys get all the best conferences.

Also, re: dissertation--Did I hear you mention something about Antioch?
