math thoughts
Lately, I think a lot about math. Although I have never gotten high marks in math at school, nor have I previously felt any desire to actually do math for fun, I have thought about it a lot, particularly in the last year or so. Summertime snack
- Chop a sweet onion into long thin strips
- Dust with salt, stir it up to mix and coat, then let it sit for a half-hour.
- soak in apple cider vinegar for an hour.
Possible tastebud and mind explosion. Eat with caution.

Superheroes
Although I haven't seen the first one, I watched Iron Man 2 last night. Tony Stark seems like perfect villain material. It seems like a shame to waste him on a hero role. It makes me glad I didn't watch the movie version of Watchmen. On the other hand, someone could still do for superhero movies what Alan Moore's Watchmen did for superhero comics. ( Read more... ) -

Sci-fi readings
I finished rereading Vernor Vinge's "Zones of Thought" which is a short story, The Blabber (1988) and two big novels, A Fire Upon the Deep (1992) and A Deepness in the Sky (1999). very improper fractions
Thanks to the invention of integers one can subtract anything from anything as much as one likes. However, this innovation has done nothing for the efforts in division. Until now. Traditionally: 8/3 = 2r2 = 2 2/3 but, if you carry it out one more step: 8/3 = 3r-1 = 3 -1/3. Furthermore: 8/3 = 4r-3 = 4 -4/3 or go as far as one likes (so far as I can ( Read more... )
