Another chance for Dick

Many years ago I saw the movie Blade Runner and I liked it. I read the book it was based on: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick and I liked it.

Maybe a year or two later, I watched the movie again. I didn't like it. I wasn't sure what I liked about it in the first place. I read the book again and I found I didn't like it either ( Read more... )

I think Philip K Dick is a lot like They Might Be Giants. You have to be in the right place to appreciate it. To me TMBG seems to have a different approach to music than most. It isn't a genre thing, it is just that they have a different concept of what makes music good. Because of this, they don't play well with others in a random mix of music. Maybe I don't have the right music, I'll have to make a pandora TMBG station and see. It's also possible I have no clue about PkD.

There's a comedian, Marcus Brigstoke, who's got a routine about video games in which there is the line: "If Pacman had affected us as kids we'd be running around in dark rooms, munching pills and listening to repetitive music." One thing about Dick's work, I've noticed is that, some of his stuff has come true in the same ironic way. Only it's not funny.

TMBD worked well in both my "Secular Spirituals" mixes which are both pretty eclectic.
