We don't know who she was. I've seen many guesses, such as Mom, Susan, Romana, Jenny, Donna.
I still haven't watched it a second time, so I can't give a proper review. I do, however, want to know about this "defence mechanism" the Doctor gave Donna. WTH? What is it, like the release valve on a pressure cooker? Does it kill people, or only stun them? 'Cause what if Sylvia and Wilf were standing over her, concerened? They'd fry. *sigh* Oh, Russell...you can be a shite author sometimes.
Yep---I was like 'Oh, Dues Ex Machina time' here! I would so much rather her have simply been able to remember and have seen the Doctor one last time, even if they didn't get to talk. I swear I never understand the writers for Donna---they took that character and made her so wonderful and interesting and then condemned her to go back to shallowness and one-note-hood.
In my world, they're still out there together somewhere, very happy!
Honestly, by the end, I was remembering Elaine's comments at The English Patient (Seinfeld ep and if you hate the EP, see this ep):
"Die already!"
I was happy Donna got some money, Mickey and Martha got together and Jack got a new boyfriend who's a dead ringer for Ianto but the strum and drag of the ep just made me sigh. Honestly, I think Journey's End was a better ending and the Dr could have regenerated to save Donna's memories!
I also read "mother." Although others were theorizing his granddaughter, based on the old old Who.
And who makes a box that has to have someone go in before someone can come out. Seriously, as Sigourney Weaver said in Galaxy Quest, the guy who came up with that should die.
I didn't even realize---that was MICKEY???? Sheez, I was thinking it was the Doctor she was going to marry back in the Sontarran eps.
I couldn't bring myself to want him to die---and I was kinda glad when he turned out to be a child about it, the 'I don't wanna go' because that's more real to me than anyone just being all grand and noble. But yeah, it went on way too long.

It just dragged on too long, esp since Eccleston's Doc went in a matter of minutes!
