So I'm a little torn on the Katy Perry on Sesame Street thing

On one hand, her outfit wasn't all that horrible. Parts were covered and it looked like she was playing dress-up

On the other hand, we do have a problem with the over sexualization of our children in this country, and there is a problem if the target audience of sesame street starts ( Read more... )

i agree with you on both points. but i doubt this is going to start a clothing trend. sometimes we need to let things go. that way we can teach our kids not to always get upset about minor things.

Leave censorship to the individual parent.

For a nation that calls itself the "Land of the Free" we sure like to tell everyone what they can or cannot do, can or cannot think, and can or cannot see, can or cannot say, can or cannot build. Knock it off.

I won't comment on the appropriateness of the dress or of Sesame Street's choice or any of that, because, frankly, I just don't care enough.

But, having a three year old niece, and having seen the way she reacts to things/recalls things/etc, I can safely say that she wouldn't really care about the "sauciness" of the outfit. Nor would she obsess over dressing like that. Kids under 6, even girls, care a hell of a lot less about clothes and what they want to wear than girls of, say, 12. Ponies and shiny new toys are MUCH more exciting.

The only people giving a damn about this are parents, who fail to see that five minutes after watching this episode, their child probably wouldn't even remember the dress at all.

There's nothing wrong with this. A low-cut dress isn't intrinsically sexual.

If you want to critique Kary Perry for anything, how about "I Kissed a Girl"? "I kissed a girl, and I liked it, but tee-hee, I'm straight!"

There's controversy over this? Seriously, I didn't even notice, and that's after being told what to look for. If Tinkerbell, Jeannie, and Ariel were safe all safe for kids, then so is this girl.

PS: This is that song I keep hearing in the supermarket. I didn't know Katy Perry had any other songs… I thought she was just the new “kissed a girl” girl (as opposed to the original “kissed a girl” girl).
