1. goto http://www.scientology.com and read the first paragraph on the page.

Since that's probably going to disappear as soon as this starts going around, I'll copy it here:
The word Scientology literally means "the study of truth." It comes from the Latin word "scio" meaning "knowing in the fullest sense of the word" and the Greek word "logos" ( Read more... )

Umm, the meaning of "logos" is not the same in Latin as it is in Greek. http://www.webster.com/cgi-bin/dictionary (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logos)
Not that I don't think scientology isn't absurd, but I'm afraid they're correct on this one. Combining Latin and Greek stems to form an English word is in bad taste, linguistically.

The two meanings explain why they went with the Greek instead of the Latin for the second root.
The fact that Scientology was invented by a sci-fi author explains why he didn't mind combining Latin & Greek in the first place. Combining roots from Latin, Greek & other ancient languages is a great way to come up with exotic sounding names for various alien races & non-existent planets. :-)

I was not stating a fact or even a theory, and AND IT'S A FUCKING MADE UP WORD!!! The fact that it has become a part of our vocabulary over the last 50 years doesn't change the fact that it was made up by a guy that conned a shitload of people out of a shitload of money, envisioned himself as a naval commander, and died while in hiding, but not before setting events into motion that killed his own children.

And by the way, I dropped out of high school and college. I have nothing against an education, but don't ever try to get on a high horse called education when you're trying to go toe to toe with me. I'm self-taught. I know most people can't do this, but I can't be taught by someone else as effectively. And you know what? They can't teach what I do. But I still manage to come out, head and shoulders above your average college student and many graduate students on the shit that ( ... )
