My depression diagnosis made a lot more sense to me when I read about the "atypical depression" classification... its clinical validity/application as a category is apparently somewhat disputed, but essentially rather than losing interest in everything/being down all the time, one still has some semblance of normal emotional function but their "downs" are really down. It tends to cluster with sleeping more (rather than less), weight gain (rather than loss), and being more down at night (rather than in the morning). (Allegedly also has ties to subclinical thyroid dysfunction and to sensitivity to chromium deficiency, but that's even more speculative.) It's also the most common kind of depression. :P

If it works better for you to think of it as "not real depression," though, then I can't fault that. It's also really hard to tell atypical depression from pervasive unhappiness with one or two aspects of one's life, like work or a relationship. Which makes the whole thing even more complex.

Anyway. Just some food for thought.
