My next hurdle is summer courses. I'm taking a Health & Fitness class and a Precalculus course at the community college to make up gym and Algebra III. I'll get college credits from them too, so I guess it's not that bad. The classes will be Monday to Thursday evenings, and they start next week. I don't know what to do about school. I'll probably fail gym and have to take two gyms next year, in addition to making up freshman history. I'm growing to hate school intensely. I am on a different plane than the so-called students of Lawrence High. So few of them are learning! They talk almost exclusively about their plans or they use readymade, shrink-wrapped topics: sports, Iraq, television, and other TV dinners of the intellect. On Saturday, Tess called my cell phone. She said she had gotten my number from Mike. The call came completely out of the blue, since I don't know her very well. I've stopped doing all my work in school. I throw worksheets and handouts away soon after I get them. I don't even bring my books or notebooks to class anymore. I feel so unbelievably free. I am an academic failure. My average in English so far is 23.5. I have averages of 25.5 and about 45 in two other classes. Interims are coming out soon, and Miss Wood made a deal with me that she won't send home a failing grade if I get all my missing work in to her tomorrow. I am not going to do that work.
