8.

He was drowning.

The wind pulled at his hair as icy tendrils of harsh whispers and sorrow caught his skin.

Fire raged beneath his flesh, running deep into the crevices of his inner being.

And yet, he found that he could still smile.

A laugh bubbles in his throat, but before he finds himself near hysterics, something snaps at his consciousness--

"Jongin... Kim Jongin!"

Startling awake, wincing when his ribs ache with a dull throb, Jongin rubs at his eyes as he sits up on the chair. He frowns slightly; trying to remember how he had gotten back in their apartment. Dawn was breaking near the horizon of Shanghai; faint traces of sunlight trailing into the otherwise dark living room.

"Baekhyun?" Jongin mumbles, getting to his feet and stretching his arms over his head.

"Nice to see you alive and well," Baekhyun greets, sitting on the loveseat across from him, "although, I'm surprised that you could be heartless enough to leave SeHun groaning in pain by himself." He grabs the laptop on the table, and connects a hand-held device to it.

"I did my best to treat him. I'm not a medic."

Baekhyun raises an eyebrow, eyes trained the computer screen.

Jongin grunts, "your eyeliner is smudging."

And heads for the bedrooms.

"Damn it, hyung. That hurts!"

Ignoring SeHun's hiss of pain, Kyungsoo sets his lips in a grim line as he removes the last fragment from the boys abdomen. Being a size of a person's smallest fingernail, the blood covered metal clatters onto the table.

"A U7600A-Pistol," Chanyeol murmurs, uncrossing his arms to hand Kyungsoo the bandages, "judging by the bullet, it looks like it was an older version." He looks to SeHun, who laid on the bed, torso bared and skin covered in a thin sheen of sweat. His complexion was paler than normal.

"If it was the newer model, you would be dead right now."

SeHun finds enough energy and consciousness to roll his eyes, jerking with a gasp when Kyungsoo's fingers ghost over his wound. "Thanks, Captain Obvious," SeHun mutters, groaning with a relieved sigh when Kyungsoo murmurs, "You'll live," before wiping SeHun's body with a damp towel.

Tired and pained eyes flutter close as the ragged breathing calms down extensively. Sleep overrides SeHun's system before any anesthetics are injected into him.

"Kyungsoo?" The door creaks open. "How's he doing?"

JoonMyun walks over to the duo near the bed, patting SeHun lightly on the forehead and wincing as he sees the tightly wrapped bandages on his stomach.

"It's a rather shallow injury, surprisingly." Kyungsoo replies, getting to his feet and taking off the bloody medical gloves. "He dodged the bullet quick enough so that it wouldn't embed itself any deeper than needed," he sighs, "but a wound is a wound. He needs rest."

"And food," Chanyeol pipes in.

Kyungsoo leers at their Chief Technician, fully aware of the tall man's implied intention. "Are you volunteering yourself to go get take-out? Because, if you and your black hole haven't noticed, the fridge is empty."

Chanyeol's bottom lip pulls out into a dejected sigh.

"Um. Knock knock?"

Jongin slides his way into the room, moving to stand at the foot of the bed. He eyes his injured friend with an apologetic gaze, finger tapping his lips in thought.

"For a child prodigy of combat fighting and such, you surprisingly lack a lot in the medical side of things," Kyungsoo comments, cleaning up the tools and blood. Not a drop of red was present on the white bed sheets under the sleeping boy; Kyungsoo took pride in his work.

Jongin shrugs. "And that's why you're here."

"What happened anyways?" JoonMyun asks, sitting on the edge of the bed and running careful fingers through SeHun's damp hair. He wanted make certain of the living heat that radiated off the younger boy.

Sometimes, JoonMyun didn't know why he was the leader; he was too easy, too soft, too thoughtful.

"A random Chinese man started shooting at us."

Jongin frowns with a shrug when he's given three identical pointed looks. He grumbles in distaste; he wasn't a man of many words.

"We were near the dance floor when these thugs, I think they were the club guards, started attacking us-- and no, we didn't start it." Jongin rolls his eyes when Kyungsoo gave him a suspicious stare. "We didn't break a sweat taking them down, but all of a sudden, the two guys that were fighting that lunatic," a shudder ran through the room at the mention, "turned their gun on us and started shooting."

Jongin purses his lips, mind drifting to that small stranger. But he quickly shakes it away before it could find a place within his thoughts. He didn't need such mundane distractions.

"I think they said something to us, but we didn't hear it."

"Why would the club guards suddenly attack you?" Chanyeol murmurs, crossing his arms in thought.

"My thoughts exactly," JoonMyun echoes, a crease forming between his brows.

"Maybe they thought it was suspicious that you two were standing so openly in an empty club rampaged by a crazy man," Baekhyun comments, walking into the bedroom with a laptop balanced on his palm. He hands the device to Chanyeol and clicks his tongue as he looks over to the bed.

"Party in SeHun's room?"

"Woah--Byun Baekhyun, is this what I think it is?" Chanyeol says, eyebrows raised.

"A crazy amount of porn sites on your Browser History? Not too surprising" Baekhyun mutters smirking. He sits onto the chair next to the bed; always the smart aleck.

Chanyeol narrows his eyes and kicks the chair with one stretch of his long leg, smirking in return when Baekhyun yelps.

"Please grow up and tell us what you found,” JoonMyun mutters, rubbing his temples.

Clearing his throat, Chanyeol quickly scans the computer screen. “Although we hadn’t found the CC, I had managed to get my hands on the Club’s Registry information,” he grins when Kyungsoo frowns at him in confusion, “meaning their transactions, restricted and private, with whoever and whatever has gone through their system in the past years.”

Deciding that it was easier to sit down rather than stand, Chanyeol crosses his legs and furious begins typing with the laptop on his knees. “Baekhyun, using his only redeeming attribute--Ow!" Chanyeol cries when Baekhyun slams his heel into his thigh; rubbing his injury, he continues with a scowl, "---managed to memorize the key identification codes of the club’s database. And good thing he did, because it’s apparent that we needed those codes to open these files."

A then, devilish smile graces Chanyeol's lips, to which Jongin rolls his eyes.

"And behold, with my brilliance as the State Army's Chief Technician, I'm able to decipher and intercept their future transactions by co-linking our base satellite to their inter-source while re-linking their database so that they," the grin widens, "will never know."

"In other words, we'll be stealing valuable information right under their noses." Baekhyun simplifies.

A surge of livid clicking of the keys resounds within the room, Chanyeol's fingers dancing swiftly across the board. And as soon as it started, the clacking suddenly ends, accomplishment tugging at Chanyeol's lips as he presses 'ENTER' with a proud pinky.

"Hacked. Linked. Saved. And sent to headquarters." Chanyeol leans back on his hands in a relaxed manner, voice lined with satisfaction, "And all before breakfast." He stares up at the trio who looked down at him with a mix of awe and bewilderment.

The silence is broken by a groan.

"I have a hole in my stomach." SeHun deadpans, awake.

He narrows his opened eyes and looks at everyone surrounding his bed. He understood they all worried and cared for him, overly so because he was the youngest, but that did not give them the right to yap and hold a tea party while he was trying to recover; no matter how important the topic was.

"So get out."

Kris had lost count on how many times Lay had sighed since they reached the house.

"Stop pacing and sit down," Kris mumbles, motioning to the plush chair next to him. They were in the den, or Lay's office as they call it. And the said male was prowling the room's burgundy carpet, imported expensively from Russia, with a frown marring his delicate face.

"I don't understand," Lay exclaims, his usual calm nature gone, "what happened tonight, Kris? What the hell happened?!"

Kris, stony faced and lips set in a grim line, shakes his head. "This never happened before. We need to look into this more thoroughly."

"I foresaw the possibilities of overdose, but not with effects such as that." Lay bites his thumb in thought, sinking his bare toes into the soft carpet before resuming his pacing.

Kris runs a tired hand through his hair and decides to open the heavy drapes; sunlight was peaking through, and neither he or Lay has had a decent amount of rest.

Just as he curls his fingers around the silk material, the double doors swing open as two males march in.

"Explain." LuHan is the first to speak. He forgoes all pretense and politeness; something only he would be able to do without Lay striking back.

"I can't," Lay murmurs, pinching the bridge of his nose.

Fury outlined LuHan's eyes; something so unnatural and unreal, that even the immobile Tao was taken aback. "Yes you can, Lay. If you don't know, than who does?"

"I know, I know! Let me think!" Lay chides, rubbing his temples. He leans back against the edge of his desk with drooping shoulders.

"I knew I should've stopped you back then," LuHan mutters, eyes narrowing as his body tenses. "But I blame my own blindness for revenge, for wanting justice, for wanting destruction." His jaw locks as his hands curl into fists; the past still had its iron shackles around him. Just when he thinks he's forgotten and moved on, the grip around his heart tightens, unwilling to let him go.

"Don't make me regret my decision for siding with you, YiXing."

"Don't," Lay snaps, flashing his eyes up to stare at LuHan in warning, "call me that."

A tense atmosphere settles around them.

And although hesitant, Tao breaks it with a soft clear of his throat.

"I'm sorry, sir, but this is urgent matter," Tao whispers, bowing slightly. "Xiumin and Chen have just told me that they ran into some intruders in the upper floors of the Club. They think some club information was stolen."

Lay waves it off with a flick of his fingers, "that's fine, there aren't anything importan--"

"It was the whole system, sir. Everything was in that database."

Pausing mid-sentence Lay turns to Tao, momentarily forgetting his and LuHan's feud. "Does this include the Blood Wine registry?"

"Yes."

A grumbled sigh. "Shit, how did they get into that room? I had a feeling this was bound to happen, but so soon..." He taps his cheek in thought. "Tao, gather Xiumin and Chen, and all the taped recordings of the surveillance cameras in the upper floor."

"Xiumin is getting treated at the moment. He got hit by a bullet during a scrimmage with the intruders," Tao explains, "but I'll grab Chen and the tapes."

Lay watches with a weary gaze as Tao closes the doors behind him.

Kris stood silently near the windows, as LuHan continued to stare at Lay, but now with contemplation rather than anger. "How long are you going to stand there fuming?"

LuHan lets out a deep breath and shakes his head.

"I respect you Lay," LuHan says softly, staring into the strong pair of eyes of the most influential man in Echo.  He remembers their first encounter, which, truth be told, wasn't a pleasant one. But it was a meeting where LuHan knew Lay would become a man who would change the foundation of his world; although, be it for the good or bad, that he didn't know.

"So don't do something that'll make me hate you."
