Fool's gold (a.k.a. pyrite, FeS2), when combined with water and oxygen, weathers. A product of such chemical weathering is sulfuric acid. The acid is produced when shallow water moves in and out of mining caves and can be carried into streams and pollute them and can pollute groundwater, which is bad for all of us.

I thought this scrap of useless scientific knowledge tied into the story as kind of a nice allegory.

lol, thanks

i'm actually going to change it to gold that once removed from the pool dissipates within an hour or so... which should work well with the gold representing the majority of disposable "artists" that exist only for a brief moment where as the gems raise above all the shallow gold and floats far there out of reach to those who cannot grasp it.
