To be honest, most things in history started with men trying to kill each other for fun...

That is very, very true. I am firmly in the camp that believes testosterone is a poison. (grin)

I'm not even sure why American football is called football, because it mostly seems to be about guys pushing each other around while holding the ball in their hands.

Apparently it was developed from a game in Europe which was basically a free for all between villages which involved kicking a ball. So the name, though it no longer really applies, had an honest start.

I don't know if you've heard of Australian football, which was probably derived from the same game in Europe, but it involves a lot of kicking, as well as tackling, throwing, etc. I don't follow any sports but I do find this type of football exciting to watch.

I think it was called The History of Football, but I'm not sure. We were watching a college game. It ended and they showed this documentary. I don't even know what channel we were on, but it was probably some ESPN thing.

I know! they didn't wear helmets or pads or anything when they first started playing. But let's face it, men are kinda dumb when it comes to games.

When Theodore Roosevelt was President (or maybe this was when he was Governor of New York) he used to spar with a professional boxer in a ring he had installed at his office building. One of his opponents connected with a right hook and left poor TR blind in one eye after that. He was always a big promoter of what he called "the strenuous life", but it's good to know that he drew the line at death.

Yeah, he defended football as a game that strengthened manliness. He was kinda king of the idiots in those days. (grin)
