Actually, I'm so het up about the whole thing I'm afraid I'm not satirizing much of anything. But insofar as I am satirizing, it's of the whole situation: Spain's reaction to the terrorism, but also the world situation that forces them into a place where the only two options are "Terrorists Win" and "Help Bush," when the right path is "United International Response."
Okay. I'm less cynical of the results of the Spanish elections than you are, then. If what the terrorists wanted were to give them money or land or something, that would be one thing...but when it's "leave us the fuck alone" and we are participating in a war that we should not be participating in, their message may have a point...
In this case it's not their message that I have an issue with, although I do that to a large extent as well. What I have an issue with is their methods, and the election results have shown unequivocally that they work. The link between the terrorist blasts and the socialist win is pretty direct.
You totally summed up my anger with the election results. Although it is too early to say this one factor made the difference (but that's the annoying social scientist in me attacking anything that claims to find a correlation between A and B).
Well, I think that more reserach needs to be done, of course, but I think that the terrorists certainly had a major impact on the elections, and impact against the Popular Party.
Well, okay, but the Socialists have more experience dealing with the country's own homegrown terrorists and have said that they're committed to creating an international coalition to fight terrorism in addition to coming out against the Bush way, plus the Popular Party shot itself in the foot by basically going "lalala Basque Seperatists lalala no al Queda here" for as long as possible. I think they made the best possible choice.
Well, certainly returning the Opoular Party wouldn't have done any good, because they would have found themselves in the same stupid situation. But returning the Socialist Party sends a very clear message to the terrorists--that they're having an impact. It's kind of a twisted prisoners' dilemma, really, where the best possible outcome for both is achieved by the rational choice. Except that it's all going to lead to more death. Which means that my anger isn't directed at the Spanish electate, but really at the international situation that meant that their only choice was the one they faced: Support Bush, or encourae terrorism. It's the worst kind of Hobson's choice, and it's one that helps only the terrorists. And for that we have no one but President Bush to blame.
I was originally a Ham Sandwich-iac, but then I realized that the sandwich would have to be 35 years old to qualify. So now I'm saying Random Hostess Product for President. Mainly for the shelf-life factor.
