Soliciting travel advice

So I may be going to England in the fall- September/October.  I've never traveled internationally alone before, and I've never been in the position to make decisions about where I'm going and what I'm seeing.  I've been to England a lot in the past to see my family in Newcastle, but my experience of it has been limited to that and a brief stay in ( Read more... )

I had decent luck with the YHA hostel I used in London. From what I've heard rom other people they're generally good across the board. They're not the cheapest hostels out there, but they've got decent standards ( ... )

Ooh, Campaign for Real Ale! I love it! Thanks for hooking me up with that!

I will be asking you more questions about the rail as I start to plan this more in depth. Thanks!

!!!!

All I have to add to this conversation is:

JEALOUS!!!

Also, if you haven't been there, Whitby (which is near-ish Newcastle, I think) is a gorgeous little seaside town. Ridiculously touristy, but there's these great ruins of an abbey up on the cliff with a lot of history attached to it.

Do you mean Whitley Bay? I have been there tons of time- love it, the Priory is awesome and I can't wait to go back! When did you go?

Nope, I'm definitely talking about Whitby. =P I was there in 2005. The abbey dates to the seventh century and there was this major synod that happened there which basically decided the course of British Christianity. Also parts of the town inspired Bram Stoker when he wrote Dracula! =D

Isn't it weird how they all have pretty much the same names? Because there's an abbey at Whitley Bay too, except that they were destroyed in the 10th century, not really sure of the story behind that one. I'll have to check out Whitby and compare. Probably get some good fish and chips too.

The trains in the UK are crazy and the prices vary hugely. It's worth seeing if you can get a young person's railcard - it gives you a big discount on train tickets and is totally worth it.
