PROLOGUE
I gave it up to Sam, my... resistance, I guess. Or, at least, I thought I did. I just let him... be angry at me, let him hurt me in ways that made me forget my own name for an hour at a time, and I wondered if that was all this was going to be. But somehow it wasn't.
He went to some edge, some extreme I barely remember beyond shifting splatters of nightmares and insults and pain. Then he... I don't know, began to even out? Not... like Sammy, not like he used to be, but... a little less wild, less drunken, less angry. More... calculated, controlled, like he was learning his own reactions as much as studying mine. And for a moment, even though I ached, he almost seemed... content, and that felt... right, like I'd done good somehow, even though I knew that made no sense.
Happiness wasn't ever something I thought likely to show up in this place, this strange new world, and his smiles confirmed it, always sharp and full of foreshadowing like bad background music in the middle of a horror flick. But contentment? That sense of just... being kind of okay with the world and being kind of okay with me? I think he almost had that. But Sam? He was never good with fences, with restraints.
Maybe we would've been alright, for a little while anyway, but Sam wanted more... and I didn't know how to do that.
