I just read When I was Five I Killed Myself and felt kind of sour on it but a bit unsure. In some ways I liked the characterisation of the intense friendship/love/attraction between the two kids but it did seem badly exaggerated (maybe that was purposeful, I don't know); pretty turgid overall. Once I was into reading it I read the author blurb (I usually avoid reading stuff on book jackets til I'm through reading the book)and thought "oh god I'm reading a book by a psychiatrist and a clown and that's popular in France" (all things I have ridiculously generalised biases against! I was kind of joking in moaning about it, BUT...). I didn't realise he practised in France. The book blurbs seemed to be (re)asserting his American-ness

:) No worries, like I said I can't remember much of the first book-- I know something must have made me read it quickly because I'm usually reading many books at once, but could have been an easy style of writing though. "clumsily attention-grabbing" is a good description of what I noticed in his other book on autism.
