Expatriates

This is pretty much a re-post of a comment I posted in someone else's journal: I have to admit that it makes me feel a little bit better when someone who has left New Orleans writes about missing it. I understand why a lot of people need to leave here, esp. if they are not from here. However, I don't understand why some of these same people need to ( Read more... )

As someone who has experienced both sides I can understand why expatriates try to justify leaving and "rubbing our noses" in it. They are trying to validate their guilt - the guilt of leaving everyone and all the problems behind. Like "see! it's so bad there! there is NO WAY a sane person could expect me to stay! i did the right thing!"I actually like to hear the criticism (though less so from expats or newbies who think they've got it all figured out). I read a lot of the Nola bloggers, and while they are obviously die-hard locals, they have very harsh things to say about living here. I also criticize Nola a lot, but if I didn't love her I wouldn't be here. To me, we are never going to solve our problems if we don't face what is wrong. I wish I could wake up every day with the strong positive convictions that some of my friends/family have about Nola, but in truth I question why I'm here often. Oh, trust me, I know everything ain't rosy. I'm pretty fatalistic about being here, but some days I feel like I need to go on a city by city ass-kicking tour.

I agree, people are quick to judge and even quicker to make themselves or their decisions seem above reproach by putting down others. I adore New Orleans, and always will partially because it is the very sort of place that inspires people to defend it. I like my little corner of Wisconsin, but I'd relocate the house to NOLA in a heartbeat if I could take Trent's and my job with us. I still think I'll end up there again someday, or at least I hope I do. Until then, I shall make a pest of myself and visit as often as possible. :-)

I moved to New Orleans when it held the title of Murder Capital. It had the highest murder rate per capita. So what? Its home, and shit happens. It got "safer". It was never "safe". Welcome to the world people. New Orleans is just another "unsafe place". But its one of the best ones to be.
