I love this episode so, so much. One of my favorites of Season 4. I will be taking a break from meta-ing/picspamming for a little over a week so I leave everyone with a classic in the meantime.
I had a long answer and somehow lost it so I'll do a little now and more in the morning. First of all, I am going to miss the Meta's. Hurry back. I have been enjoying the discussions.
First thing- the joke was funny because Toby completely wigged. This is probably the funniest Joker besides the one they play on CJ when she becomes Chief of Staff. That was funny not so much because of the Joke but because Toby losing it is hilarious. Your comment about CJ knowing Jed so well is partly why she is made COS, even if it is not believeable. more in the morning...
I love these discussions too! I really anticipate at least getting through S4. I agree that this joke on Toby and the joke on CJ are two of the funniest practical joke. I'd say those two plus "I'm Marion Cotesworth Haye" are the three funniest practical jokes on the show.
I don't believe that Sorkin in a straight line trajectory would have made CJ COS and her chiefly PR background isn't traditional for Chiefs of Staffs. However, there's something about CJ's Extreme Fearsome Competence, the CJ/Jed relationship, the dramatic needs for Josh and to keep this all in the family and more that totally sold me on it and made me love the idea.
Anyway- after that huge digression-I think they have a very solid and believeable marriage. I love those type of powercouples. Huge fan of both the Clinton's and the Obama's.
Word. I love real life powercouples and the writers and Martin Sheen and Stockard Channing really got that vibe through their marriage whether they were being angry or lovey-dovey. Word also to Abbey's prank actually being helpful. In my meta for The Red Mass, I gave her sixth place credit that contributed to Jed's performance.
Will Bailey! I love him. Apparently other people don't. I just want to pinch his cheeks. And congratulate him on his hard line against clinic protesters. But mostly the first thing.
Abbey and Jed are one of my favorite fictional couples too, and I always loved that they weren't desexualized because they're middle-aged. They're nuts about each other and it shows.
As for the "attractive aide" exchange, I always kind of appreciated the way we saw CJ pick her battles. I mean, I have huge issues with sexism on WW generally, but I felt like CJ's conflict about being a feminist in the boys' club to end all boys' clubs was realistically-handled.

I adore S4 Will so hard. I really love Sam so I feel badly even saying this but I like S4 Will even more than Sam. However his defection to Russel, kind of took the bloom off of his character.
However, I couldn't completely dislike his character even at the height of his opportunistic arc. He was too interesting and I give him credit for being the only person on that damned campaign to internally question and try to rationalize the wisdom of advocating for Russel.

I love them so much! I heard that Martin Sheen and Stockard Channing first met when filming their first episode together on this show- The State Dinner. It's amazing because they really seem like a couple that
