Cat people was my favorite movie - when I was 14 or so. My best friend and I were obsessed with it - but that was partly because of the David Bowie soundtrack. I doubt I'd be able to watch it today.
"Bon Cop, Bad Cop" is a Canadian movie from last year. A dead body is found on the border between Ontario and Quebec, one half lying in each province. Two cops, one from each province, are assigned to investigate. The story that follows is a very enjoyable blend of humor and excitement, with good characters and a satisfying resolution. I'm a big fan of unpretentious entertainment made with a high level of craft and intelligence. This movie is one of the better recent examples of that underappreciated school of cinema.
You can choose either French or English subtitles on the DVD (or both, for that matter), so it's easy to follow.
I just went to put it in my Netflix queue and Netflix doesn't carry it. They carry a lot of crap with Colm Feore in it but very few of his good films. I'm starting to wonder if it's a good thing that I know who Colm Feore is or if it just shows my obsessive-compulsive tendencies.
Forrest Gump is one of those movies (maybe the only movie) that makes me hate it more every time I happen to catch part of it on TV, for the reasons you mentioned. The only thing I can say for it is I think it was unintentional, based on some of the articles I read about it at the time. Zemeckis and Hanks just seemed so blithely clueless, seeing only the corn-bread "feel-good" aspect, divorced completely from the deeply divisive politics.
Grosse Pointe Blank is one of my favourite movies. I was doing a top ten list desert island list with T the other day, and that's one of the only movies that showed up on both of our lists.
I have to say, I'm not as disgusted by Tom Cruise as everyone else seems to be. He's never been my favourite actor, but ... he's ok.
I actually think Cruise can be a decent actor. What turned me against him (which I'm sure keeps him up nights) was when he said all those things about people who take prescription medicine for their psychological problems, during his public kerfuffle with Brooke Shields. That struck me as cruel - something a bully would do - and I've been off his work since then.

I'm with you on the scariness of Forrest Gump.

I just saw a recent clip of Tura Satana--she hasn't held up well.
I never heard of Bon Cop, Bad Cop. Why's it good?
I, too, saw L.A. Confidential multiple times in the theater.
