Same way we all do--blood, sweat, and tears. Don't just think that life has to be practical all the time. Follow your passion, because ultimately, that will be the most practical. Trying to force yourself to do something will only end in half-hearted efforts.

Besides, just because you choose one path for now, doesn't mean you always have to walk that one, single road. If art loses it's meaning for you, you can always switch to an office for awhile. Then, maybe try something else.

Stop living your life as if the only reason for it is to accumulate more things. So what if you end up living in Montana because you can't afford California prices on an artist's budget? If you're doing what you love to do, you'll find happiness. It's not as if you get a second chance at this--and it's not as if these things money buy will really get you much. Comfort is one thing, but joy is another. Go out there and be impractical. What's the worst thing that can really happen?

that's actually pretty practical. The only real hardship is finding those perfect pics that will land you a spot in their magazines.
It would be silly to assume they don't accept freelance pictures, the best however is probably to run the whole photojournalism thing first. It's essentially the same concept anyways, but while you do that always submit stuff to the good ol' Nat Geo, no doubt eventually they will accept you into they large pictorial arms.

You get there by finishing school. You get there by nabbing a kick ass internship. You get there by chasing your dream and not giving up. You can do it sissy. You just have to work hard at it and make sure you get the right connections also!! That never hurts. ;)
