It's rather simple, really. Make a slip knot. Put the loop over the needle, tighten. With the short tail (not the one attached to the skein), make a loop around your index finger with the loose end closer to your palm. Slip the needle in the loop from the palm side of the loop, yo with the working strand, pull the needle back much like you do when knitting, slip the loose end off your finger and snug up the loop around the new loop on the needle. Keep doing that until you have enough stitches.
