OMG, fic! Fic by you! This fic, specifically, by you!

I am made of equal parts distress and yay and squee: distress because OMG, POOR MASTER, POOR BOTH OF THEM, yay because OH SNAP, DOCTOR PWNAGE, and squee because it's all just so damn good.

I very nearly cried when the Doctor told the eponymous story. How the hell did you manage to make this crazy cracky premise deep?

You kill me dead with flattery, you rogue. I'm sooo glad you felt the master sympathy AND the doctor pwnage, because someone else was like 'now he's been raped and is saying sorry, what?' and I was like, no, no, Five is a beast of pwnage here! Look at him emotionally eviscerating the Master and then running away like a badass! And it's good to know that I haven't accidentally written 'leatherpants!Master soullessly rapes emo!woobie!Five, who is fine with that.' Because that would be sadtimes.

I did know I was going with that story so early on, it just seemed to /fit/ so well. And WITH ABOUT 50,000 WORDS. For serious, I think this is /technically/ a novel now.

I like to bring the emotional fruit salad to the potluck, full of conflicting elements. These apples don't get on with the lychee...

The Master's marriage proposal was so nerdy and wonderful. Then after that little moment of smiles it all turns dark and bitter-sweet and tragic.

I *love* a good tragic arc and it's pulled off beautifully here, with the tragedy springing from the respective natures of the Master and the Doctor. They take the actions they *have* to take because of who they are--the Master paranoid and possessive and the Doctor independent and terrified of emotional commitment. So they inevitably hurt themselves (and each other) by doing what they think they have to do.

I feel so very sorry for the both of them.

Thanks so much--I love that the narrative tension and characterization are working that well together for you. And if there's one thing I want to get right in this one more than that sense of the story progressing inexorably, it's for both of them to be sympathetic, and for neither of them to have a monopoly on being /right/.
