I gotta say, my view of Oxford street and the gay community therin has been severely tarnished because of my last experience there. I went to stonewall with a mixed group of mates (ie. gay and straight; When i kissed my date, the bouncer came up to us and asked us to leave because we were "bringing down the tone of the club", because we were a hetero couple. I was so incredibly offended and incensed and downright disgusted. If a gay couple were asked to leave some club or other for the same thing, there'd be uproar and legal proceedings and all sorts.

ah, yeah, i remember you telling me that... i was a little shocked they'd say that... i mean, i could understand them thinking that and using any old excuse to get you guys out, but to say it outright... hm.... although i still reckon you should have put on a deep voice and said (to the bouncer): "i'm not a woman mate"

mmm but you do point out one of the street's uglier sides.. 'gay' as in anti-straight-our-space-fuck-off.. which unfortunately seems to afflict some people still

yes, all valid points, and i agree...

'exodus' -- unfortunately, not my headline! the original (and SSO version) had 'Subsiding Style Mile,' but the Oz editor musn't have liked it.

Violence -- unfortunately I did only spend one sentence on it, and I should have discussed it more but didn't for space reasons.. definately can't walk down the streets of Campbelltown (!!) holding hands with someone of the same gender... I don't think it will disappear as gay space or gay space will ever become bigger somewhere else (but who knows), but in terms of the general atmosphere/community activity/types of nightlife/etc it does seem to have died down a fair bit... but then what you say is absolutely true, it will still probably be the place where gays feel most (in a relative sense) comfortable about expressing their sexuality in public
