Yeah, I think it's how it works, for the most part. Especially with Merlin, where you have an influx of new stories EVERY DAY and no one is able to keep up with everything. And not everyone tracks their preferred tags on AO3, so they kind of rely on newsletters and fests/challenges to tell them what to read. It's only natural that any fandom event gets more attention than stand-alone postings. Unless you're polomonkey of course XD
I used to do a good job of keeping up with all the Merlin postings on ao3. But once I started writing, I really couldn't anymore. I used to go back to all the old big bang challenges to read those stories too. Probably helps in that case to have been in a fest. The long stories from several years ago that weren't posted in a fest will be lost in the bowels of ao3 unless they have enough kudos to get to the top of the list... Or at least in the top 50 pages or so
