I seem to have developed a bit of an allergy to hair bleach - of the kind that started as a swollen scalp on tuesday night (when I dyed it), since when the lymph seems to be draining down my face - currently around my eyes/cheeks are puffy (so much so I could barely open my eyes this morning and have taken the day off work). It's not painful as ( Read more... )

Hmm, I don't know if something astringent like witch hazel, or a cucumber and peppermint pack might help?

Might see you at alison's, though am going along earlier rather than later.

Mmm. It might be a reaction to bleach - but it also sounds exactly like a reaction to hair colour. It's a known reaction - well known to good hair-dressers and the medical profession, if not to most hair dye users.

If it doesn't get better by tonight - if it even feels like it is getting even slightly worse - get to A&E.

oh aye, and the reaction can start suddenly, even if you've been using hair dye for years. One day you use the same dye as always, and you react. that's why you're always supposed to do the patch test - and even that's not infallible.

*nod* yes, i've read various horror stories about exactly what you're describing in the likes of cosmo, etc. sounds icky :S

i was just going to say this.

and i second the "go to a&e if it doesn't get better right away", too.

i assume you'll have shampoo'd your hair to get any dregs out and away from your skin already, xanta? if not, it might be a good idea, even though it does hurry the fading.

From all the stories I've heard about hairdye allergies this is really, really mild.
I think the problem is just the lymph from the initial reaction draining away. I always wash my hair immediately after dyeing it so there shouldn't be any traces of bleach/dye left, and there's no swelling/itching etc on my scalp now - the swelling is just moving down my face (the skin isn't irritated in any way,and there's no heat with the swelling etc).
It's more just mildly uncomfortable because of the swelling rather than anything else, I don't think it's really anything to worry about. Thanks for the sympathy (although as it's self inflicted I don't feel I deserve it!).

hmm.. are you _sure_ you don't need to see a doctor? I dunno swelling that is moving down your face doesn't sound very good :/
