"I walked around Lower Manhattan and saw paper raining down. At four thirty in the afternoon, I stepped off the island and onto a ferry. I turned around, and I got this horrifically beautiful view of the skyline on fire. Everything was covered in ash. It was like a movie set, with everyone gone." He pauses. "Nothing seemed real that day. Nothing ( Read more... )

How could you honestly care enough about any stupid political cause to rob another human of their skin, their soul?

This is how I feel about abortion.

you are certainly entitled to your opinion, and while i don't necessarily agree with yours, i commend you for having such a strong one. i love that you can care so much about something; most people are age are too uninformed/apathetic to give a damn.

Oh my, I couldn't agree more. And I love you for posting that. It's good to know I'm not the only person our age who actually thinks about things other than what they're wearing tomorrow, or whatever inane thing it is. Never doubt your beliefs, and keep expressing your opinions!

i actually like it when people disagree avec moi.
i hate when so-called "authority figures" stifle the creative opinions of people who are supposed to be their inferiors, but perhaps not so surprisingly are much better informed than them and can back up their political views with some actual evidence. refusing to hear out your opponents is a sign of insecurity. what are the conservatives so afraid of? that we will start thinking for ourselves? god forbid fox news find a dissenter in the kingdom.
i am glad we are of like minds, though. this world needs a you.

Just so you know, I am, in no way, celebrating "W" *shudder* and his endeavors in Iraq.

But when you say "...but guess who decided to put themselves in front of the line of fire? They did." I must disagree. Maybe it's because of my family's background in the military, but the soldiers are just doing their duty. For many, the military was the only way they could get an education or succeed in life. So what they are doing may be unjust in the great scheme of things, they are just doing what they are assigned to do, and they should not be condemned for that.

I am in no way condemning anyone for making that choice. Currently, there is no draft; If you are in Iraq at this moment, you chose to be. Whether you joined the army for financial reasons, whether it was a last resort is inconsequential. You are there for a reason. You signed that consent form yourself; No one else inked your name on the line for you. I don't agree with or support anything remotely militaristic. There are countless other ways to get an education. I happen to be lucky enough that my parents can pay for most of mine, but if I weren't, I would break my back filling out loan forms, slaving away for minimum wage, and sacrificing left and right so I could go to school. Education is one of the most important things in the world to me, and as my Barnard alum told me, "Scarcity is a state of mind. It exists only within the imagination." You'll find the money somewhere. And yes, you are absolutely right, they are just following orders, and I believe that is the problem. Adolf Hitler said, "What good fortune for those in power ( ... )

i love you and your words and for not giving a shit of who tells you that you are wrong to think any of iti love you for writing this. i was in south beach during election week, and while i had a wonderful time hanging out at the kerry edwards headquarters in downtown miami, i realize that the rest of the state is unfortunately not quite as enlightened as our rainbow-touting miamian friends, and i think that you are doing something so incredible, so commendable, something that most teenagers, especially girls, are fearful of and consequently fail to do: think for themselves. i know so many people who simply absorb the opinions of their respective parental figures, and judging by the fact that you left "my dad" out of the whole bush-ain't-so-great-no-matter-what-everyone-other-than-miami-dade-county-thinks thing, i am guessing you withstand some sort of challenge/attack on your ideals, and i realize how tough it is to stand up to your parents. so go you on that count ( ... )
