well as you know, i went from dark brown to blonde in a VERY short period of time, how my hair stayed as healthy is beyond me.

if you are using hair dye from boxes, you can use this stuff called "super blonde", which is effective on even dark hair. i went from black with all-over red highlights, to light blonde in one sitting. just be sure to follow the directions exactly. it is available at target.
