You are in the NW, they are in season! Of course half the battle is finding where they grow. We are lucky, there is one wild huckleberry bush growing on the corner of our property.
There are 2 types of huckleberry. The red type that I have here grows wild in the cascades here in the west. It is known as a "highbush" variety. This variety tastes like a cross between a blueberry-cranberry-gooseberry. It is tart but very good. The blue type is known as "lowbush" and it grows in more areas of the USA. It is a lot like a blueberry (yet tiny) and much sweeter than it's red cousin.
People on the east coast have no idea what they are missing with huckleberries. I try to pick that bush clean every year so we can have one pie. It truly is a lot of labor to make a pie because picking them is such a chore. But the reward is soooooooo worth it :)
