So obviously yesterday was the election, and I don't have much to say about that specifically, but I saw something interesting in how people were reacting to it through the things they were posting online. ...an interesting argument, from someone who did not vote for Obama despite the obviously recognizing the importance of not electing McCain...

Anyway, referendums/questions/whatever-the-state-calls it are indeed super-important. They're the best shot at direct democracy we've got.

MA decriminalized marijuana possession in small(ish, actually a little too large for my comfort) amounts, and also outlawed commercial dog racing... We also decided to keep our state income tax rather than eliminate it (which would've been devastating to social programs, particularly in lower-income cities and towns).

...unfortunately in states like CA the opportunity for people to make their opinion count did not yield results I personally like... but it is still good that people should make decisions directly by popular vote...

Well, I don't know the climate in RI or MA, but in CT republicans do not get elected for president, no matter how poor the voter turnout is. So this year especially there was no danger of my personally contributing to McCain's election, though it ultimately wouldn't have mattered if the entire state voted for him since we're only worth about 4 of nearly 100 point by which Obama won ( ... )
