CHARACTER

✧ NAME: Luka Redgrave
✧ SERIES: Bayonetta

✧ HISTORY: Born the son of journalist Antonio Redgrave, Luka was witness to the criticisms heaped upon his father for following fairytales and folklore - namely, the truth behind the Umbra Witches and Lumen Sages. This led to his untimely end when the two uncover a coffin under a lake. The moment he examines the coffin, he reawakens Bayonetta from her 500 year sleep. Antonio finds himself lifted from the lake and his back is snapped, brutally killed by angels who had come for the masked woman. She disappears to battle them though it was far too late to save Antonio. Luka was witness to all this and due to untrained humans being unable to see angels, is led to believe Bayonetta is his father’s killer.

Twenty years later, Luka follows in his father’s footsteps and becomes a journalist himself. He uses his father’s notes as leads to track Bayonetta and finally catches up to her in Vigrid. Though he attempts to expose her and steal a few snapshots, he gets thoroughly embarrassed outwitted and lets his quarry get away. Believing her to have escaped, Luka shouts after her that she only runs because she has him to fear.

Luka manages to escape being torched in Vigrid and meets up with Bayonetta again at the Crescent and Sunrise Vallies. After getting a face full of lipstick graffiti and being put in a position most would kill to be in, he finds her gone again.

Moments later, they meet again in the Vigrid Air Force Base where he finds a strange child following after Bayonetta who refers to her as “Mummy”. He notes that she is around the age he was when his father was killed and comes to one conclusion: Bayonetta killed her parents and enchanted her to make her believe the witch was her mother.

Cereza is put in Luka’s care and he ends up nabbing a Military vehicle in order to beat Bayonetta to Isla del Sol, the location of the Ithavol Group which seems to have ties to the Lumen Sages. Thanks to angels destroying Providence Bridge, none of them can make it across and to the island. Cereza and Luka turn back and Bayonetta runs off to deal with more angels.

Forced to find an alternate route, Cereza and Luka hoof it. Cereza trips and cries, leading Luka to try and stop her to by giving her candy… which proves rather effective. Soon after, they are attacked by angels and Cereza enchants her glasses, allowing Luka to finally them for himself. Seeing them and Bayonetta in action causes him to recall his father’s death and give it a second thought.

He and Cereza are reunited again with Bayonetta at the Vigrid Air Force Base where they hatch a plan to get on the island. Before they could leave, another angel makes its appearance. Cereza is nearly crushed but saved last minute by Spidercat Luka. However, he looses his grip and the two are separated. Luka is left on the airfield while Bayonetta and Cereza end up on the plane.

Luka manages to hijack a helicopter and rescues Cereza and Bayonetta (kinda) as the plane they were on goes down. When they get closer to the island, he gets… distracted… and the helicopter gets wrecked. The only way to get to the island is by missile and Luka is forced to hang on for dear life while Bayonetta takes the… wheel? When they finally get to the island, Luka manages to snag Cereza and the missile controls back from Jeanne during her fight with Bayonetta.

Luka emerges again inside the Ithavoll Building with Cereza and meets up with Bayonetta again in Balder’s office. There, he learns the truth behind his father’s death and is nearly consigned to the same thing. He somehow manages to survive and after Cereza is returned to her rightful time, attempts to help Bayonetta when she is overcome by the power of Jubileus. Unfortunately, he is forced to sit and watch as Jeanne and Bayonetta take the battle to space. All he sees with the rest of humanity are the remnants of the giant Jubileus rocket/statue crashing down to earth and fears the witch dead.

The next we see of him is at Bayonetta’s funeral where he brings two large bunches of rosemary now that “remembrance” might suit her better. Apparently, no one told him the funeral was a set up for as angels come for Bayonetta, the nun presiding over the funeral is revealed to be Jeanne. Bayonetta emerges from her coffin and the attack against the angels continues. Unfortunately, just another day in the life of the woman he's chosen to chase around to the ends of the earth.

✧ TIMELINE: End game, before the epilogue

✧ PERSONALITY: Once, Luka lived to find his father's killer and take his revenge by exposing her and her kind to the world. This made him follow after his father’s footsteps: using his notes and discovering the truth behind the Umbra Witches and Lumen Sages. Because of this, he can be quite knowledgeable, having done his fair share of study over the years. He claims to know the truth, believing solidly in everything his father had discovered and is willing to expose that truth. He’s rather good at gathering information due to his being a journalist and will go through any lengths to get his information. He’d managed to plant a bug on Enzo, Bayonetta’s information mole though this bug was discovered and disposed of.

He can be quite willful and determined because of this. Luka is incessant and hard to shake off. No matter how far Bayonetta gets, he always manages to bump into her one way or another. Of course, not all his plans are perfect. Some are rather sloppily thought through due to his brash nature. Sometimes, he just makes it up as he goes along. When something doesn't work out, he has the tendency to cuss up a storm. Despite this, he has a rather happy go lucky personality. When not dealing with anything business related, Luka is rather carefree. He manages to smile despite everything that happened in his past. He also has a soft spot for children and shows himself empathizing with Cereza due to his childhood.

Unfortunately, he tends to be overwhelmed by his emotions and doesn't really think things through. No matter how improbable the chances, his opinion of someone doesn't really change and he will assume the worst of them if he already gets a bad impression right off the bat. He draws the strangest conclusions and logic oftentimes gets overwritten by emotion. For years, he chased after Bayonetta, thinking her as his father's murderer without even hearing her out. He'd called her names, insulted her, even accused her of killing Cereza's parents when he didn't know any better. If Luka doesn't like you, Luka doesn't like you... and only glaring evidence will make him change his mind.

Which brings us to another important part of him: the truth. As a journalist, Luka's drive is really the TRUTH. That's glaring truth, absolute truth, unobstructed truth. This is what caused him to chase after Bayonetta, who he believed had killed his father. All for the truth.
Luka has no combat abilities whatsoever but he has impeccable timing. If someone needs to be pulled out of a fight or if he needs to make an escape, he uses a grappling hook to make that quick getaway. Of course, he's rather confident with his abilities (misplaced confidence, really as he's actually a bit of a klutz on occasion.) and denies there being any measure of luck in what he does -- only skill.

Of course, these skills are put to good use. Apart from getting himself out of trouble, he never hesitates to risk his neck to swoop in and rescue anyone who needs rescuing. He's done it once for Bayonetta and once more for Cereza. This only shows his loyalty and protectiveness over those he cares about... or at least those who he chooses to care about.
He can also be a rabid skirt chaser. If it’s human, looks considerably attractive and female, he’s all over it. Unfortunately, this doesn’t work out for him very well. His cheap pickup lines do little to impress any ladies or land him a date. He may have the idea down pat but the execution leaves a LOT to be desired. Usually, he leaves the ladies feeling stunned in the “WTF was that” sense rather than the “damn, I forgot to get his number” sense. Unfortunately, he’s not much for the overly aggressive type. He tends to fluster easily for a playboy.

✧ ABILITIES/POWERS: Ah, he doesn't really have any special powers. He's just an ordinary guy... an ordinary guy who can freaking parcour! Yep, if there's one thing Luka can do right, it's get away and get away fast using this grappling hook which gets him up and away from danger.
✧ TIME OF ARRIVAL: Evening!

✧ MASK DESIGN: Because it's ironic.
✧ PLACE OF SOLACE: The Gate of Hell, a bar his father said he used as his office back in the day.

SAMPLES

✧ FIRST PERSON: In which he gets a chance to get his journalist thing on.

✧ THIRD PERSON:
It was raining when he returned to his rented apartment that night. Perhaps one could call it perfect: the weather suited his mood. The world seemed a much colder place to him now. Wordlessly, he pulled his scarf tighter around himself as he fumbled with the door. Luka uttered a slight grunt of frustration as he finally managed to force it open with a slight kick. Not the Ritz but it was all he could afford. There was no denying his fatigue. Normally, he’d be able to whip up a little something for dinner; maybe a stew and some bread along with coffee for after the meal but today, he was too tired. He felt it in his body right down to the pit of his heart. All he could do now was slump down on the couch and stare out the window, not even caring to turn on the TV. Oh, it’d be on the news, alright. Jubileus hurtling from the sky, everyone seeing it, he was sure the media would be all over it. But he didn’t need to see what the reporters had to say about it. What he wanted to know wouldn’t be on there.

Bayonetta. What had happened to her? The last he’d seen of her, she had been rocketed into space thanks to Balder and that statue that seemed to have come out of nowhere. He hated the feeling of helplessness, unable to do anything, say anything or pull her out. Luka wished he had more power, just a measure of power enough to have done more than just stare like a gaping idiot. And where was she now? He didn’t know. Logic said that what he’d seen earlier; that lightshow coming down from the heavens was her. She was dead. However, there was a part of him that refused this fact, rebelling against the thought of Bayonetta dead. No. No, that was impossible. Nothing seemed to keep that woman down. Nothing could. She’d faced angels. He believed in her more than anything, perhaps more than the truth. And yet, he’d heard otherwise. Enzo had been an easy man to bug and Luka had managed to pick up a scrap of conversation between him and Rodin: something about a funeral. Bayonetta’s funeral.

With a sigh, he pulled himself from his chair and glanced out the window. The rain had stopped and the moon was full. Blast that moon. Why did everything have to remind him of her tonight? “I guess the chase is over.” He muttered to no one in particular. Luka’s eyes glanced around the room as he made his way to the kitchen. Best to get a little food in him, after everything that happened today.

As he searched for a snack, (He wasn’t feeling up for a full meal. The nerves in his stomach removed any and all hunger pangs that where there.) his eyes turned to a small jar of rosemary he’d kept for seasoning’s sake. A small bitter smile formed on his lips as he drew the herbs out of the fridge. “Maybe I should bring some flowers.” He mused. Rosemary did have some pretty blossoms after all.

Tomorrow, he would look for the local florist and secure all of the rosemary flowers he could. It would be a fitting farewell and an insurance, considering where she was headed. Tomorrow, he would show up uninvited with those blossoms and say goodbye. Tomorrow, he would probably mourn with the rest of them, the rest who would miss her.

Tonight, however, he still needed his sleep.
