I'm on a quest to find a collection of interesting short stories. Even an individual "scene" or a chapter of a book that holds its own. If you happen to have a favorite that you enjoy or can point me in the direction of a particular collection please let me know. If you have written one yourself, that's awesome! If you wouldn't mind sharing, ( Read more... )

Anything by David Sedaris or Marjane Satrapi. Embroderies by Satrapi would be ideal. I think. Of course I'm not really sure what the hell you're talking about.

David Sedaris has an interesting anthology of other people's work that he edited. It includes a lot of very different kinds of stories, and is really good. I don't know exactly what you're looking for. If you want weird, there are some interesting collections by Jonathan Lethem out there, including everything from aliens to crack cocaine. I personally really enjoy Edith Wharton, Flannery O'Conner, Tobias Wolf, and Eudora Welty- all very different styles. Oh and of course Earnest Hemingway. All of those have some really brilliant writing in them. I also read Raymond Carver's Cathedral this summer and I didn't really like his stories, but they are interesting, so that could be something to check into. Alright, that's all that's coming to my mind right now. I hope that helps.

You could go with Indiana Native, Kurt Vonnegut- Slaughter House V, I think it is, has interesting short stories. (I like Harrison Bergeron, myself.) Also, some people adore and some people hate Sandra Cisneros' House on Mango Street. I like the David Sedaris recommendations. Comedians tend to have great little chunks of stories if that would work. But you know I love me some Ellen Degeneres. Dave Barry has good stuff, too. My mind is blank, I should be able to think of a lot more.
