Fic? Hell, the substance abuse was my LIFE for the enitre year I was between the ages of 18 and 21. And the addictive behavior? My life in general. And both the substance abuse and addictive behavior describe the lives of many people who are currently my friends. I don't need the fic for that:p
Can't think of any fanfic offhand, but there are a few books/movies I could point you toward that have done it really well to the extent of--in a couple of cases--me whimpering in a corner and trying not to scratch my face off.
(Mostly) Movies: - Requiem for a Dream, book or movie (though the movie very annoyingly has people's pupils do the opposite of what they should do) - Spun - The Salton Sea - best opening sequence ever! - High Art - Trainspotting (book too!) - Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (you kinda have to be in the right mood for that)
A few other books: - Junkie Love - Good memoir about heroin addiction - A Scanner Darkly - one of Philip K. Dick's best and most tweekerly paranoid endeavors - High Society - Brilliantly funny satire about a politician who gains notoriety by supporting a bill for the legalzation of drugs
And because I'm not entirely immodest about these things, my own endeavor into the genre. Two of my proofreaders quit about 20 pages into the MS because it triggered them and made them want to go and shoot up in dark allys and such. Heh.
