Because I promised the lovely ahestele, and I could use some reading material myself:

Rec me a book. I'm partial to fantasy, queer, and supernatural lit, not partial to het (though it's not a dealbreaker if the story is good). If you can't come up with a specific book, rec me an author whose works you love.

Thanks!

I stumbled across a book in the "clearance" section, skimming through it, it sounded interesting. So far it is, http://www.bookbrowse.com/excerpts/index.cfm?book_number=668 is a description for it and a excerpt.

That does sound interesting! I'll have to check it out at the library.

It has been interesting so far. I love when I find a good deal (it was only 4 bucks) and it actually pans out. lol

TANYA HUFF! That was the name! I knew someone'd recommended an author I wanted to read last time I asked. *writes down* I'm headed to the non-crappy library today, I can tell.

you might want to look for her "Valor" titles as well - Valor's Choice and The Better Part of Valor. military SF with a kickass female marine sergeant in a mixed company (human & alien). I think they're great reading, exciting and gripping.

Seconding the Tanya Huff rec, especially The Fire's Stone. (And lisan wrote me a FS story for my birthday a couple of years ago. I'm sure I can dig it up if you're interested after reading the novel.)

"Fool on the hill" is...fantasy, kind of. Set in our world, at a college, including fairies fighting evil rats, modern day knights and a killer puppet. It's crazy and beautiful and I love it to bits.

I did a little review here

"Sewer, Gas & Electric: The Public Works Trilogy" plays in the future and includes crazy robots, a mutated shark, Ayn Rand and a submarine loaded with animals.

Those were his first two books and they're all kinds of crazy. The third one ( Set this house in order, very spoilery review) is different, it's more serious and crazy in a different way than his first two books. I'm still very much in love with it.

Matt Ruff just creates awesome characters and he can pull of the craziest stuff without the books getting ridiculous.

And now I want to reread them.

I'm glad you said 'without getting ridiculous', because that's my only worry with "crazy" novels. My interest isn't captured by books that don't have sufficient character or plot weight to balance the madcap. I'll check them out, for sure. Thanks!

Have you read the Jacqueline Carey 'Kushiel' books? Fantasy set in an alternative Middle Ages/Early Renaissance in a Europe which was partially populated by the children of angels, with a heroine who is a, hmm, how to put this, an ultra-high-class call girl with a god-given taste for pain. Complex, fascinating, beautiful writing, very erotic. Start with "Kushiel's Dart".

Dude. Any and all Robin Hobb. I especially recommend her Farseer Trilogy, which consists of Assassin's Apprentice, Royal Assassin and Assassin's Quest. It's fantasy, deals a lot with war and politics, a little bit about magic, but my favorite thing is the subtext between the main character, Fitz, and the King's Fool. They are so fucking in love it's not even funny. Not so much in the first trilogy, but the next one - the Tawny Man trilogy - that's where their relationship really blossoms.

Amazing, amazing books. You should really give them a shot.
