Because I promised the lovely ahestele, and I could use some reading material myself:

Rec me a book. I'm partial to fantasy, queer, and supernatural lit, not partial to het (though it's not a dealbreaker if the story is good). If you can't come up with a specific book, rec me an author whose works you love.

Thanks!

I adore Dorothy Allison, tho I vastly prefer her essays (I imagine you've heard of Bastard out of Carolina, followed by Cavedweller, which are her fictional works - both excellent but brutal. I've not been able to reread them). I think Skin is my favorite, tho I also adore Trash. I love her big brain & how she talks about sex, class, race, and gender.

Someone else recommended the Wraeththu books, which I second with the caveat that her writing is very dramatic. I can forgive that for the genderfuckery she does. & I very much enjoy Lynn Flewelling's books.

I'm going to second the Lynn Flewelling recommendation. The Nightrunner series is fantastic and chock full of gay!

Hee! Those, I actually own. It's hard to find a lot of these books in the library around here (which is crappy), so I end up buying a lot of things online.

I also got three books from the library a few days ago--fantasies--that I've loved so far. Not sure if you've already read them, but if not:

Staying Dead by Laura Gilman (part of the Retrievers series). Modern New York mage chick Wren and her best friend Sergei take on jobs to retrieve property for their high-paying clients. (Because the clients are always right, retrieval sometimes = theft.) The prose style is fun and engaging, I like the characters, and the magic is believable.

The Hallowed Hunt by Lois Bujold, about a woman who gained a magical curse when she killed the King (her would-be rapist). She's being escorted--probably to her execution--by a guard who has the same curse. It seems like it might turn into a het love story, but both characters are interesting and there's some cool political stuff.

Shadowfall by James Clemens, which is about a man blamed for the killing of a god. He gained a sort of spiritual corruption in the course of the event, and a lot of big expectations from the world. I haven't read too far ( ... )

I second the rec of Gaiman's Anansi Boys, I think you'd enjoy it.

I don't know if you've ever read any of Terry Pratchett's Discworld books, but they are hilarious fantasy novels. The Truth and Hogfather are my favorites.

And if you're into non-fiction, I LOVED Sarah Vowell's Assassination Vacation, and I'm currently reading The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson.

Oh, and you should read
Homicide: A Year On The Killing Streets if you haven't already.

I'm not a huge Pratchett fan. I like them when I start reading, but somewhere in the middle I hit a hip-and-ironic overload and abandon them for something with more genuineness. He's very clever, though, and entertaining.

I haven't read Homicide! I really need to do that.

Hmmmm.

I really love Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series, though the first five or six books are a bit better than seven through nine. Ten just came out; I haven't read it yet, heh. It's het, but very good het. It's medieval fantasy, but it does NOT read like it. The first book is Wizard's First Rule; I think you'll like it.

I think I may have read one or two of those years ago--I'll have to check the library on Monday.

That sounds really familiar. Hmmm. I'll have to have a look at it on Monday at the library, see if it looks like something I've read. Thanks!
