Oh hey, world. I never forgot you.

The truth is that I'm too easily entranced by this facebook business. That coupled with the steady defection of LJ-pals from LJ-land and the events that occurred last year (described a few posts back) involving the discovery of the abhorrent secret life a formerly close friend who was one of the reasons I joined LJ in the first place have left me ( Read more... )

I know how you feel on all accounts. Especially the grandparent volleyball. I spent most non-school time with my grandparents as well while my parents worked and traveled and such. My cousin was given a lot of their furniture when they downsized as he was expected to move out before me and he lost all their furniture when he stopped paying for the storage unit he had it stored in and didn't let anyone know about it. I was doubly hurt A) When I didn't get any of their furniture and B) When he so carelessly lost it all. You are REALLY Fortunate!

You should add me on FB if you haven't already. I am TOTALLY addicted to Farmtown now.

i'm about to bake pfloide and i some cookies with the few ingredients i can scavenge from our freshly-unpacked kitchen.
my kids are at sandbanks- the eldest working for the summer, the youngest camping for a week- so we get to honeymoon and unpack.
the strains of "justified and ancient" can be heard coming from pfloide's office.

i'd love to chat sometime.

I miss your writing. I think facebook is kind of a shit outlet for actual writing and sharing so I keep coming back to livejournal.

Also, I sent you an email. YAY!

I'm pretty sure The Party doesn't hire freelance writers on a per-speech basis.

I was one of Jack's three speechwriters during the last election, and it was 15 hour days for 37 days in a row, or nothing at all.

No kidding? I was figuring they'd be seeking volunteers since Greg told me they didn't generally pay for speeches. I'm not really opposed to putting in 15-hour days for a good cause, but everything I've heard seems to imply that's the sort of thing that demands a prior NDP history plus a permanent move to Ottawa that I'll never make. I wonder who writes Mulcair's speeches?

That stuff is generally a second burner issue for me at the moment, however, given that I need to find the kind of work that pays before I can afford to the other kind. But thanks for the heads up.

I wasn't a volunteer during the election. I say that not defensively, just to clarify what I meant! Getting in as a volunteer with a specific MP is probably a way to go for sure! They have staff writers who write Jack's stuff. I work for an MP now, and I do some of her writing. I wrote this speech for Megan Leslie while on a 5-day contract, but I think that kind of thing is sort of rare. she just didn't have any staff yet.

Anyway, for sure pick an MP whose speaking style or critic area appeals to you and offer your volunteer services. Who knows what could happen?

I anticipate that a combination of defections, acclimation to twitter/facebook, and changing life circumstances that make internet confessionalism both more difficult and less necessary, will render LJ redundant to me within a year.

It's too bad though, eh? Given what Tara said above about how it allows you to write. I still think that LJ is the best blog platform because it allows you to choose which groups of people you wish to read what you post. But beyond that, the difference between this and Twitter is the difference between a book and an infomercial. I think that's sad. It's really only the defections that get to me-- facebook is basically just distracting because it's there. But this remains to me the platform I'd like the most to use, and it bums me out that it's drifting away (through the fault of people like me) in exchange for 140 characters of non-expression.

LJ is definitely the best-designed blogging platform. The simultaneous sense of community and privacy haven't been duplicated, and won't be for some time after LJ is gone ( ... )
