For Mercy or For Glorification

Mar 06, 2004 15:12

Did Jesus come to save us and by this glorified God?

or....

Did Jesus come to glorify God and by this we received salvation?

NOTE:

Please don't simply respond with thoughts, but scriptural reference, eliminating blind belief.

Debate, but please keep it clean, civil.

The idea for this post came from this thread.

Ready ... set ... debate!

I hate to be a party pooper, but honestly I don't see how these kinds of debates are relevant. I think it is clear from the scriptures he came to save us AND to glorify God. What need do we have to place one above the other? It seems like we can get bogged down in this kind of minutia when our time would be better spent meditating on more beautiful, beneficial things. Of course, this is just my opinion, but its how I live my life now. For me, it is a vast relief to leave these (what seem to me) trivial thoughts instead to simply know how much God loves me through his work at the Cross.

thought can totally bog you down if it's all you ever do
one of my best friends used to always tell me thinking is for the weak minded

but things like this make you contemplate your faith, and it humbled me to think that it is all about Him, not all about me, even though i was on His mind and He would have died just for me, if not the whole world

i understand how you feel about it, and i totally respect that. but sometimes its fun to play devils advocate ;)

Thanks for the civil reply... I didnt mean to be antagonistic. I see where you are coming from too... just some ppl get too caught up in these things and lose focus of the gospel. :)

it doesnt even matter.
its both.
its interchangeable.

but by it being both and interchangable, doesn't that make it matter more so?

Jesus asked a question similar to this....

"Which is easier, to say to this man get up and walk, or to say "your sins are forgiven""

His point was and is that both things came about by the same thing. One is not easier or harder then the other, or better or more important, because all of it came about by the very same thing, thus making them equally as wonderful and awsome as the other.

good call! that's a great concept. i didn't reply to this earlier, not sure why, but i think that's exactly how God would have us look at it. just because our feeble minds can only have one motive most times doesn't mean our Creator is the same. God knew what was going on, what was to come, who are we to say that He did things for one or the other, His glorification or our salvation?

sorry, i see now why you could consider that off-topic
i didn't at the time, this thread on the forum taught me a lot about why we believe what we believe, and it ministered to my personal relationship with Christ, humbled me to not think that it's all for me, because it is all about Him, and yet, He would die just for me
thanks, though, for commenting
