Wow... the struggle with an obsession-compulsion. I can't say I understand it myself, but your writing gives me this feeling like "this is what it's like". If I don't know, I have a hint now.
It turns into a complex form with social anxiety at the door, too. Perhaps a metaphor about the concern of leaving her own emotional self unlocked results in her quickly re-locking it again...
This line: "Gina slid to brush her toes against the carpet. It was shaggy and slightly rough, which resembled her life." I loved that little detail, it was -her- starting point and I didn't attach to her until she was free, unobserved, a quantum particle, a free radical within Schrodinger's cat box.
It hits another point that they say Einstein couldn't open a door by himself... not to say it wasn't true, but perhaps the spirit is met with its own insurmountable obstacles in form of a door that it must face on its own...
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I suffer from it myself, but it's very mild. My parents both have it as well. We all have different kinds though. Thanks for reading!
