I definitely think he was dead before going through the veil, but going through the veil made it impossible for them to even give him a proper burial. It does seem that the veil is some kind of gate to the other side, but I don't think it's anything evil. But I definitely don't think that Sirius would stay even if it was Heaven, cause that's not how he is. He would have come back to stay with Harry, knowing that he was the last family member he had left. He wouldn't turn his back on Harry for anything in the world, including Heaven.

I have to concur that he was dead right when Bellatrix hit him. The Veil would definitely seem to be a two way passage, and I think it was just a dramatic point that he died and *then* fell through the Veil, to drive the point home.

As for what curse it was: as far as we know, Avada Kedavra is the only killing curse (unless the are more Unforgivable Curses that she's just not mentioned).
But the Red vs Green question is an interesting one. I've of the mind that this is one of those spells that whose characteristics are particular to the wizard that uses it. Much like Patronus, or the Prior Incantatum(sp?). There are just so many individual particularities in the wizarding world that I wouldn't be remotely surprised if Voldemort's curse was green, and Bella's red.

Ok, blasphemy time.
Am I the only one who's not too upset that it's Siruis who died?
I was petrified that Macnair (or whoever it was) had killed Hermione, or that Dumbledore was about to sacrifice himself a la Obi Wan in Star Wars ( ... )

Yeah I'm definitely a bigger Lupin fan. But it is upsetting that it was Sirius cause he was the last family that Harry had (besides the worthless Dursley's). Now Harry has lost his parents, and his godfather. Sirius's death has cut ties to what he probably felt was his last living connection to his parents.

But yeah, I would have been more upset if it was Dumbledore.

Well, both Voldemort and Wormtail's Avada Kedavra spells are red, so I assumed that it was always so.

I'll admit that, considering the alternatives, I guess I'm not so upset that Sirius died, but I really wanted to see Harry happy and I thought that he'd do it.

Lupin rocks.
