I'm trying to write up my speech for tomorrows Take Back the Night. I am having difficulties. This is actually bad timing because I'm on my period which means I cry for 5 minutes if I trip over myself. I'm already seeing myself getting up there and starting to cry when I read what I have prepared. And the event is being hosted in the BTR room, for ( Read more... )

Thank you for trusting us and sharing your story here. I hope your Take Back the Night speech goes well. I think it's more than okay if you have to shed a few tears; your story is not an easy one to tell. ((hugs))

Aww thank you. It's just so difficult for me to cry in front of good friends never mind strangers. But maybe the atmosphere will just comfort me and make me not even notice my tears. I'm not sure. But thanks for reading.

Best thoughts for tonight. What you're doing is very admirable.

Regarding public speaking, I've done a fair sum of it. If the audience is intimidating, try and keep your gaze above them, if there are lights, try and look into them...I always found that more useful than picturing them naked (always found that kind of erotically distracting).

Actually the speech is tomorrow night. But thanks for wishing me luck.

When I speak in public I do always end up focusing on the bright lights and it gives this like surreal effect, kinda just adds to my nervousness.

Well thank you. That was really nice to hear. But I don't know if I would go as far as to say there is hope for the world. I'll see how people respond to my speech, then maybe I'll say there is hope in the world.

That you can make that speech inspires me.

I think you have to cry when giving a speech like that. At least a few tears because its important to convey the feeling to the audience. Tears in the beginning of the speech and then intense/passiontate speaking towards the end.

Overall my favorite part of the speech is towards the bottom part where it talks about reclaiming your sexuality. For this particular audience I think that's extremely important along with the part about not hiding in shame. Its the hiding in shame that allows sexual violence to be such a huge disease on society.

I have a lot of suggestions of where to take it, but thats not what you need. Its as long as it can be or maybe even too long. The only thing you can shorten is the top part, and remove some of the background info. Leave the godfather part because that helps them relate.

Thanks for reading it and leaving feedback.

I expect to cry at the beginning and towards the end. I just don't want to be up there like bawling and not being able to finish my speech.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if I went into enough details about reclaiming sexuality. I agree that it was important to mention but also not the most appropriate setting to go into details. Most of the women there would be horrified by some of my methods of reclaiming sexuality.

I am concerned about it being too long but there shouldn't be any type of time limit unless the crowd happens to be huge and there are a million girls that end up going up there and telling their story. I may or may not cut out certain sentances. I really didn't find it to be rambling, just lengthy.

To have come so far from such horrible beginnings, I awed by your dauntless and undefeatable human spirit. I would kneel before you and hold you close in homage. May those who listen to you tonight echo in solidarity with your cries of defiance.
