The Getout

Dec 03, 2006 20:27

After his shower and slipping into something nicer than his workout clothes, Victor did some snooping, and managed to find a window that he could open. The view was something breathtaking, even with the barred cage around the outside to prevent falls. Not a problem for what he had in mind though. When he let his powers charge up faintly, he could ( Read more... )

Billy blinked at Victor as he came out, his fingers wrapped around Teddy’s. “You got down here fast,” he commented. “Ready to go?” He stepped out, jerking his head towards the nearest subway entrance. “Thaterway, unless either of you feel like chipping in for a cab.”

Teddy squinted in the sunlight, bringing his free hand up to shade his eyes. He had been dithering in his mind about whether or not to go out, but concluded that it was probably for the best to do so before he got into the habit of spending the day curled up in bed.

It helped that Billy was there.

"It's a nice day." he demured in response to Billy's question, nodding in greeting to the boy who had met them outside. "Hi. I'm Teddy." He lowered the hand he'd been using to shade his eyes and extended it towards the boy for a handshake.

He wasn't about to let go of Billy yet.

Victor looked at their held hands, then shook Teddy's free one. "Victor, nice to meet you." It was still something new to be hanging around guys like this. He didn't dislike them, but it was still different. He turned towards Billy. "Subway's fine with me."

“Excellent,” Billy said, leading the expedition down into the underground. On another day, he might have taken his bike, but his mom had informed him regretfully that his had gotten totally thrashed when the Super-Skrull had blown a hole in the living room. Not that he actually needed a bike these days, but he couldn’t go flying and teleporting everywhere.

“We should be in Mutant Town pretty quick,” he told Victor. “Unless the Mole Man’s decided to take his vengeance on the surface world again or something.”

Billy continued to hold Teddy’s hand on the subway, paying more attention to their surroundings and watching their stop than the conversation. But he was going to pay Kristoff a visit later to see if he couldn’t at least get onto cordial grounds with the Latverian. At the very least, he could make sure he got fed.

"Kristoff's in his lab room sulking and Vision's..." She paused. "Hiding and sulking." And in love with me and I have no idea if I love him back. And if I love him back I don't know if it's really him or the Iron Lad in him and I don't know if that even matters. She leaned her head back against the seat.

Billy felt another little stab of guilt. "I probably should have invited him along," he said. "I got the impression that Eliza likes him."

Was that jealousy Cassie was feeling or did she just think that was jealousy? She was oddly silent and started fidgeting with the buttons on her jacket. "He probably wouldn't have come." She said finally. "I don't get him."

Cassie blinked. She could ask a number of things: when were you made, who raised you, how did you join the Runaways.

"...Does that make you Vision's uncle?"

"I believe it would, depending on how you'd consider relationships," Billy said in an off-hand manner as he climbed the last few steps and flung the door open. He stepped out into the well lit fourth floor hallway and made a bee-line to the nearest door. He could hear music thumping through the walls, and identified it quickly as Soundgarden.

Not a particularly good sign, but he wasn't going to leave until she opened the door.

He knocked twice. "Eliza?"

No answer.

Victor shrugged uneasily. "Depending on what internet rumors you believe... and the 'relationship' between the Visions, it could make me Billy and Teddy's uncle too." He looked to the others as Billy approached the door, lowering his voice. "Who's Eliza?"

"Person I said we were coming here to visit," Billy pointed out, frowning at the door. "Remember? She was at the Tower when everyone and their dog decided to try and kidnap Teddy." He knocked a little harder. "And I KNOW you're in there Eliza Morag, so open the door."

"Absolutely not."

Billy sighed. "I could break the door down. I have powers. It wouldn't be hard."

"Bet you couldn't."

But the music inside was turned down, and the locks clicked open. The door swung open, and Eliza turned a full on scowl on the whole lot. "See? I'm fine. Not even bleeding from the eyeballs anymore."

Well that was quite a welcome. At least Eliza wasn't hooked up to an IV.

"Er, hi." Cassie smiled. This was going to be awkward.

Eliza's head cocked to one side, and she nodded to Cassie. "Hey."

Billy stood there, a slight, expectant smile on his face. Eliza's gaze returned to him, and she glared. His smiled got a little bigger, and she scowled. "Absolute not, Kaplan. Go away."

Billy tilted his head to one side, still smiling. Eliza continued to glare before making a disgusted noise and flinging the door wide. "I just put a pot of soup on if anyone's hungry," she announced, turning on her heel. "Can I get you all anything? Soda, tea, coffee, water, juice? Billy Kaplan if you say one word I WILL throw something at you"Wasn't gonna say a thing, Izzie," Billy said, stepping over the threshold and into the apartment. It was actually resonably large by New York standards, with a spacious living room taken up by an ancient couch and a very new TV and shelves of books and stacks of long boxes up against the wall. There was an alcove with a stove and a fridge that hummed noisily. In one corner was a computer, which had just finished asking the black hole ( ... )

"Couldn't they get us a better writer?" Billy asked, flipping through another issue. "We have got to talk to someone about this."

"And then you can kiss what little secret identity you have left goodbye," Eliza said, again with that too-sweet voice.

"I've got a secret identity."

"Billy, dearest friend. Light of my life. Provider of so much entertainment. You don't wear a mask."

Victor smirked at Billy fussing over the book. "Why don't you send in your own stories anonymously?" He turned to Eliza. "And not everyone needs a secret identity y'know." He paused. "Then again... all our parents are dead or disassembled. Me and the others from LA I mean..." He rubbed the back of his head.

"I need a secret identity." Cassie took a sip of her coke. "Not that it'll last for very long." Then her step-dad would disown her. "I probably should have joined your group." She joked. Of course she didn't mean it, she loved being a Young Avenger, and running off to LA would've given her mom a heart attack.

Victor smiled genuinely. "Hey... always an extra bed at the Hostel. Nico's parents built their lair big enough for a small army. Considering it's underneath a tar-pit with no air conditioning, I'd pack some light clothing though." He grimaced, remembering nights of having no recourse but to sleep in his birthday suit.

He had an uneasy feeling that would have led to some awkward situation eventually. He was sure of it.

Eliza peered over Victor's shoulder, one hand resting on her hip. "So it's not true? S'cuse me a minute, I need to close a bet." She reached over and pulled up her Favoites, going into an internet forum. She typed quickly in a thread titled "Teen Sex-Bot: Fact or Fiction", then closed it. "Nice to have that settled."

Billy was still chuckling quietly on the couch.

Victor gave Eliza a disbelieving expression. "We... we've got forums about us?" He gaped at the website Eliza had brought up, then realized he hadn't watched what she was typing. "I... I'm gonna give you the benefit of the doubt that you were on the RIGHT side of the bet."

He glared half-heartedly at the still laughing Billy. "And you can go to hell."

Teddy had finally found a napkin and was carefully wiping his mouth to hide his grin. He wondered if there were any sex-bot rumors about the Vision and who the rumors theorized that said Vision sex-bot was for.

...Or maybe he didn't want to know.

He glanced up and over towards the door.

"Do you guys hear something?"

Eliza gave Victor’s shoulder a conciliatory pat. “I wasn’t actually wagering. I’m just the bookie,” she said. “I’m Bookie24 on the Avengers Forum, in fact.”

Billy finally stopped chuckling, but only by not looking at the cyborg at all. He followed Teddy’s gaze towards the door, frowning slightly, then looked to Eliza. The girl shrugged. “I hear something, but I don’t hear them, so it’s probably Cyrus.”
