In Hot Water (cue the cannons!)

"I'm not going to ask what you all were thinking, going after Hulkling."  Captain America said, doing his level best to keep his voice calm... and not doing a very good job of it.  "But I do want to know what was going through your minds when you broke him," he thrust an finger in Tommy's direction, "out of a federal institution."

"But I do want to know what was going through your minds when you broke him," he thrust an finger in Tommy's direction, "out of a federal institution."

Tommy frowned, shifting his weight on his feet uneasily. He didn't like that way that sounded at all. Why was it that things always came back to him? Like it was his idea to break him out and go chasing down aliens. He'd only gone along with the Young Avengers to get out of jail without being chased down. (Otherwise he might have knocked Patriot out and made a break for it) He was at least entitled to a head start at this point; he'd broken his nose for a bunch of people he didn't even know for chrissake.

He wasn't going back...hell, he couldn't go back. After all of the damage he had caused he sincerely doubted being treated like a labrat was going to be his biggest concern. He didn't know what they would do him but he wasn't stupid: It was going to be bad.

"If you don't want me here I'll leave, but you aren't making me go back." He'd sooner bring this tower around everybody.

"Nobody's going to make you go back." Billy said, quietly but firmly. He hadn't been more than arms reach away from Teddy since they'd rescued him from the Super Skrull, but he's clearly kept an eye on his white haired doppleganger.

Tommy looked over at Wiccan who was standing next to his boyfriend just as he had been since they'd rescued him, blinking before nodding. "Well...good. I just wanted to get that out there."

"What happens to you isn't for Wiccan to decide." Captain America said, his voice just as firm as Billy's. "We're getting in touch with your parents now." His eyes swept over all the teenagers. "All of your parents."

The Vision stood very still, waiting for his turn to speak.
"Captain," he began. "Thomas Shepherd was on the fail-safe list created by the former Vision. I highly doubt that he would included..." he paused, trying to think of the proper term. "...a "Young Master of Evil" amongst the Young Avengers. The explosion at the school was an accident and when we rescued," he emphasized, "Tommy from the institution, he told us that they had been experimenting on him and trying to transform him into a weapon."
The Vision gestured around at the other Young Avengers. "They arrived here seeking assistance to rescue Hulkling, but none was forthcoming. Did you expect them - us - to sit on our hands and wait on your leisure?"

"We expected you to think of the larger picture, Vision." Iron Man said, keeping his tone lower as several of the other Young Avengers continued speaking with Captain America. "That's what the Avengers do. You know this."

"[I'm sorry if you're disappointed.]" the Vision responded, directing his attention to Iron Man. "[But I will not apologize for my part in this. We did what we felt that we had to do. Perhaps you think that we were incorrect and I don't doubt that we have much to learn. What would you have done in our situation? If one of your teammates had been kidnapped and it appeared that no one was taking you seriously?]"

"The same thing we have done in the same situation before: deal with the larger threat before focusing on the smaller one." Behind his featureless mask and mechanical tone, there seemed to be some small sympathy in Iron Man's words. "Jarvis was correct when you came here for help before: Teddy was the only person in danger, and the situation that the Avengers were already dealing with was larger than the kidnapping of one super-powered teenager."

Kate walked in as quietly as possible, trying not to attract attention. She'd taken a detour to the bathroom when they got back to the Tower for Very Important Girl Matters and it looked like the adults hadn't waited for her presence to chew everyone out. Greeeat.

The Vision noticed Kate's entrance from where he was talking with Iron Man and gave her a stiff nod in greeting. He didn't look pleased with the proceedings, but then no one else did.

Kate nodded back and walked toward Teddy. She hadn't heard one way or the other if he knew his mom was dead, but he looked like maybe he did. After losing her own, there was no way she was letting anyone go through that without all the emotional support possible.

Billy raised his head as Kate approached and wiggled a couple of fingers in a ghost of a wave before turning his fully attention back to Teddy.

I think it's time we discussed the facts. evilst February 14 2006, 17:06:56 UTC
Iron Man waited only a moment for Captain America to nod in reply to his request before continuing. "You brought this situation to us, so now you're going to have to live with how we choose to deal with it." He paused as his armor updated him yet again, replayed a short segment from a midnight news program.

"So don't interrupt me until I'm done. We need to know everything that's happened. What we know -- which is mostly from the news reports, since we only just got back from South America to hear about this and go find you lot -- is that after two incidents involving the Super-Skrull which endangered innocent civilians, your families, and resulted in several tons of property damage, several injuries and one fatality -- you came to Avengers Tower looking for help. Then, when we weren't here, instead of waiting for us to return, you took a situation where you were in over your heads and made it worse by taking it upon yourselves to break a super-powered juvenile offender out of a federal holding facility, resulting in yet more ( ... )

No one else spoke up right away, so Kate took it upon herself to mention the other thing. "The Super-Skrull seemed to think Hulkling was royalty or something. Kept calling him 'Your Highness' and 'hatchling' like it was Swan Princess for the new millennium. The Kree were claiming him too, so I don't know what's really going on, but at this point Teddy could be king of the universe and it wouldn't fix anything."

If it was any other subject (on any other day) Teddy wouldn't have minded Kate's tone and words so much. He breathed in deeply through his nose and then took over, shrugging away the hands and touches that sought to comfort him, and let the words flow steadily, staring from Iron Man to Captain America as he spoke.

"Kl'rt -- the Super-Skrull thought -- thinks I'm a Skrull because I can shape-shift. That's why he came after us both times. My mom went to Billy's place to find me, and he killed her when she pulled a gun on him. And then he kidnapped me. I don't know anything about --" he paused, turning to look at the boy who resembled his boyfriend so much, "--Thomas? That's your name, right?"

"Tommy." He corrected, looking up from his inspection of the carpet. He hadn't really expected anyone to talk to him since he'd been a bit of a late add-on and only knew what he'd been told en route to rescuing Hulking. "They-" he pointed the the others "Rescued me from the facility and said they needed my help to go against that Super Skrull guy and I agreed. Helping was the least I could do to get out of there. I don't really know what happened before."

He bit his tongue to keep from arguing that they had seemed like jerks to him. They were still Spider-man's teammates and it wasn't a good idea to get on the bad side of someone on his side. He had a feeling he was going need as many people on his side as possible when this all came to a head.

"Uh, sure. Something to eat sounds good, I guess." Spider-man did kind of have a point: it had been one very long day and he knew it was only a matter of time before whatever energy he had just vanished. Hopefully he'd be close to something resembling a bed when it happened.

"And then we detour this way into the kitchen and hope that no one has eaten the last of the snack foods without buying more." Spider-man said, swerving around the corner. He hopped up onto the wall and from there to the ceiling to better rummage around in the high cupboards.
"Check the pantry over there, would you? I think that's where the cookies are. Or did you want something more healthy? I think we have carrots and sandwich-fixings in the fridge."

"Ah...cookies are fine." Big on the health food he was not. He looked in the pantry and after a few seconds of looking found the package. He grabbed it and turned back to Spider-man. "Got 'em. So...this tower. Kind of cool looking."

A lot nicer than any place Tommy had ever seen for sure.
