I don’t understand why English speaking people have «friends only» journals? There are not «friends only» journals among my Russian friends. Sometimes we have some locked messages due to serious problem (I killed my neighbour because he didn’t lend me money for vodka) or some personal questions (what should I do I am 65 and I pregnant?). May be ( Read more... )

Some people don't want any attention from strangers. They don't want to explain themselves to jackasses. And it's the internet, so the jackasses are everywhere.

May be you are right.
I noticed that Europeans and Americans consider as a normal to go to psychologist to decide some problems, but Russian think it is foolish because they can say our neighbour everything. May be because Russian don't go to professional doctor they strange and mentally abnormal sometimes.

Also, if you're a young woman, you're not going to go to your leering old pervert neighbor to talk about your problems. If you are not interested in hearing from leering old perverts, you can friend the people you are interested in hearing from, and cut everyone else out.

The reason I have a Friends Only journal is because I wouldn't want people from school or other people I know in real life to know what I'm writing about.. it's private, I guess.

I keep my journal open because I want to invite people to see my photos and read the things I write. But I do understand why some people lock their journals, to stop certain people seeing what's there.
Of course, it could also be because I'm closer to being Russian than most other people from my country! I like Russian people! :)))

It is because you have to be careful about who reads your personal info now adays. A perfect example is that I was "discovered" by ABC News Good Morning America to be on a panel discussion from my livejournal. It was very bizzarre.

I thought that was great to get the opportunity to fly to New York and meet famous people and be interviewed, but at the same time it gave me major creepy feeling that they found me through my livejournal. I have been more private since then on who can read about my life and my family. Especially since I post pictures of my family.

My journal entries used to be public, but I don't feel comfortable doing that anymore. I talk about friends, co-workers and relatives a lot. I'm afraid someone I know would find my journal and be offended by something I had written about them.

Also, a lot of journalists seem to read Livejournal and quote people's entries in their articles. I wouldn't be happy if I opened the paper and saw one of my journal entries in it!
