Disappointed in DDI

Dec 02, 2008 01:52

So, after talking DDI up a bit to a friend, I decided to see if I could show it off a bit, first helping him level his LFR character, a newly 3rd level Genasi Swordmage ( Read more... )

I'm sorry to hear all this. But in truth, the CB Beta would be expected to have bugs and let's face it, online publishing is still a black art with much to be learned yet ( ... )

This compendium just came out -- it's the compendium for November, and I'm sure it'll be fixed up soon. The CB problems are a bit more troublesome, since last I heard they weren't planning on putting out a new version until after the open beta (so open beta in the next week or so, but new version early next year).

I'm a fan, already signed up for a year of DDI; the potential customer is yoav_y. As you know, he isn't the most tightfisted guy on the planet, but he's not willing to pay the subscription fee for stuff like this.

I know at least one person applying for an open Editor job at Wizards, so maybe they have staff issues or something, but I'm honestly a little worried that they're just not built for short-turnaround stuff like monthly magazines and LFR modules, since they usually with such a large lead time. Maybe it's just a matter of them adjusting to the faster pace... we'll see.

Well, it looks like someone read your review, and took it to heart... A bunch of the DDI brass just got laid off.

Should be interesting to see what they do next with that.

Ouch. There's some senior names in there.

I doubt that's a good sign for DDI and WotC's online presence.

Ouch, agreed.

I'll assume that a few of those guys took the severance-to-freelance offer, but I'm pretty sure that a few of them are just out of a job, and that sucks. Good luck, everyone.

Well, to be fair, it WAS pretty.
And if it *did* work, I would have been happy with it (you know me.. I never trust what I do on paper.. it's nice to have a tool that computes everything for you). Unfortunately, having to cross-check the tool to make sure it did it right is doubly-worse than just doing it on paper :(. But it does do powers, which the spreadsheet does not...

Right now using the spreadsheet. It's working, although it *is* a pain.

Pity about the layoffs. That's probably a really bad sign for the product....

I'm playing around with character concepts and the CB lately, and it seems that the Swordmage in particular is its achilles heel -- the mixture of Weapon and Implement in particular seems to be frequently confusing the program (and thus wrong in the end). Sucks.

There's an update to the Bard Preview, and it's kind of a doozy -- there's a Bard Correction posted as a news item (not an errata, nor as a revised magazine) that sort of addresses the issue.

I say `sort of' because the correction causes as many concerns as it fixes. In addition to the we-know-what-you-meant errors, the text implies that they meant to remove one of the two powers that they incorrectly glommed together in the published magazine, but doesn't directly say it, and doesn't seem to address the fact that the text in the magazine says explicitly that both powers remain.

Sigh.
