I posted this as a response to celebrian_3's post about the disappointments of the election. I was pretty pissed and down about it all yesterday, but several things made me feel better, and after ranting a very long comment, I figured I might as well post it in my own journal.

I agree that we're making progress. I think you only have to take a quick look at the media to see how gays are represented. Only two decades ago they were ridiculed, ignored or demonized on TV and in print. Nowadays they are protagonists in dramas and comedies, talk show hosts, and are in other visible positions in the media. They are politicians and leaders in many fields (Portland voted for its first gay mayor this year! His opponent, a Japanese-American, would have also been acceptable. ;) ).

I definitely think progress is slow and that we have a long way to go, but equal rights for gays will happen eventually. If we can't actively work for the cause, we can at least stand up for equal rights and fight intolerance through our words and deeds.
