Peppers

There's a "free food" spot at work, where people occasionally leave extra eatables. Last week someone brought in a bunch of peppers from their garden: some little bell peppers, jalapenos, and some little red peppers who's likes I hadn't seen before. I took a handful and sauteed the bell peppers this evening to go with a baked potato. After ( Read more... )

I ended up sticking my hands in ice water for a few hours. I don't think this was the smartest thing I could have done, but it took the pain away nicely (And I wasn't quite brave enough to try the suggestions like sticking my hands in bleach). Looking now, it seems like I should have used something oily (like vaseline or veggie oil) to get rid of the capsaicin and then treated the burn, but I survived just fine and my fingers show no sign of irritation (which is more than I deserve, because I ended up falling asleep with my hands in the ice water. Good thing the water warmed up fast enough that I didn't freeze as well.)
And Tammy said she took some too and that they were Scotch bonnets and that there was a note warning that they were hot. So it really wasn't anyone's fault but mine. But now I have a good story. :)

Is it any better now? I read quite a bit of this discussion: http://faq.gardenweb.com/faq/lists/pepper/2003050749028028.html and it looked like there were some good suggestions there.

Thanks! I ended up just using ice water to numb the pain, but next time I'm wearing gloves (which I should have know to do anyway, because that's what we do when we peel green chile, which is much milder).
